About the BOEC Summer Internship:

During the summer, interns support Wilderness Program courses by preparing, implementing, facilitating, and evaluating these courses. Courses range from one to fourteen days and may take place at the BOEC’s wilderness site or in a mobile format, such as camping, canoeing, or rafting trips in Colorado and Utah. These programs serve participants of all ages and abilities, including children with sensory processing disorders, youth and adults with visual impairments, historically disadvantaged youth, adults with traumatic brain injuries, children with hemophilia, and adults with multiple sclerosis, among many others. Course activities include hiking, canoeing, kayaking, zip-lining, climbing, white-water rafting, and more. Interns are involved in every aspect of course delivery, working as support staff under the guidance and supervision of experienced Course Directors and Instructors.

This internship provides invaluable experience for students pursuing clinical and capstone opportunities as part of undergraduate and graduate programs and can also be an excellent option for those in a gap year or exploring a career change. The hands-on nature of the role develops skills in client-centered care, group facilitation, adaptive programming, and outdoor leadership, which are applicable to fields such as recreation therapy, physical therapy, occupational therapy, counseling, and social work. The diverse participant population offers interns exposure to various medical and social conditions, enhancing their understanding of inclusive practices and fostering professional growth that aligns with clinical or therapeutic career paths.
