Position Description 

Maine Youth for Climate Justice is seeking a full-time Advocacy & Organizing Director to lead our advocacy and organizing efforts. They will work closely with the Executive Director. They will be someone who has experience organizing youth and working in coalitions, with a background in environmental, climate and/or political science.  An understanding of the dynamics of Maine state politics is preferred, as well as an understanding of the clean energy landscape in Maine, fossil fuel divestment, and/or other climate related issues.

Responsibilities and Services

  • Facilitate a legislative team, support legislative trainings, and help plan and execute our annual Youth Day of Action;
  • Represent MYCJ in various coalitions, collaborate with youth and partners to move our policy priorities forward;
  • Write and present legislative testimony for MYCJ’s policy priorities;
  • Represent MYCJ in the Maine State House in Augusta, build and maintain relationships with allies and elected officials at the state and federal level;
  • Help coordinate advocacy campaigns, from the initial brainstorming phase, through the legislative process, and tracking implementation;
  • Support our Monthly Teach-Ins for Youth and other educational programming;
  • Communicate and collaborate with MYCJ’s Community Engagement Director to ensure our advocacy efforts and calls to action are well transmitted to our membership through email, newsletters, social media, etc.;

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree or at least 3 years of equivalent work experience; 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
  • Experience supporting volunteers, grassroots organizing and campaign building;
  • Experience writing legislative testimony, LTEs or Op-Eds and/or articles/blog posts;
  • Strong interpersonal skills; ability to work with a variety of different groups and stakeholders;
  • Highly organized, and able to coordinate and track the progress of different projects concurrently.

Compensation and Benefits

  • This is a full time tax-withholding position (36 hour work-week) with hourly rate of $26-28/hr, dependant on experience; 
  • This position is eligible for MYCJ’s full-time benefits, which include 25 days of paid time off, a $100/month cash benefit (intended to help with healthcare costs), and a $300/year home office stipend (paid out monthly and considered taxable income)
  • Twelve paid federal holidays, plus one floating holiday
  • MYCJ virtual offices are closed during the week between Christmas and New Years Day

Physical Requirements

Able to work occasional evenings, weekends, and travel; operate computers; and sit or stand at a desk for extended periods of time. This position is remote but requires ability to travel to Augusta frequently during the legislative session.
