The Illinois Natural History Survey is seeking up to 4 field technicians (4) to conduct applied research in aquatic ecology and large river systems throughout the state of Illinois. The technician will assist large river ecologists in the collection of standardized long-term river monitoring data with additional targeted data collection. This position will be 40 hours per week and will be located in Oglesby, Illinois at Starved Rock State Park.
QUALIFICATIONS
Must have or be in the process of working toward a bachelor’s degree in aquatic ecology, biology, zoology, or a biological-related field. Must demonstrate a working knowledge of, and ability to collect, biological data such as fisheries and water quality in a large river system. Understanding and experience with standardized long-term monitoring sampling protocols is preferred. Experience using large boats, outboard motors, trailers, four-wheel drive vehicles, and maintaining field equipment is also preferred. The candidate will participate in boat electrofishing, fyke netting, hoop netting, and other appropriate gear types as well as be expected to perform field station maintenance duties and laboratory work when needed. This position requires significant physical exertion (including carrying 50 or more pounds of gear), commitment to safety, and meticulous data recording. The individual must have a boating license or have the ability to obtain an approved boating safety course once employed. The individual must have a valid driver’s license, a strong ability to swim, and must be able to work long days in extreme weather conditions.
Salary: $16.00-$18.00 per hour, depending on experience.
Available: Four technicians are need June 2nd—October 31st, 2025, with a potential extension to December 2025. The start date can be adjusted depending on candidates’ availability.
