Be a central figure in the inspecting and decontaminating trailered watercraft for AIS.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, this position will:

Inspecting Recreational and Commercial Watercraft at Mandatory Check Stations.

• Inspect watercraft at check stations for AIS, conducts routine inspections, identifies, and preserves possible AIS from watercraft, report watercraft if infested with AIS so that it will be decontaminated with hot water pressure washer; records collected information on electronic Tablets.
• Interacts with the public, conducts standardized interview to obtain watercraft data, performs routine data entry.
• Check station set up and removal, transport trailered electronic reader boards, deploy signage alerting watercraft of check stations, tasks occasionally require ability to lift 75 lbs., some travel and outdoor work that may include overnight stays.

Office Support.

• Collect, organize, and compile information from check station operations.
• Complete and submit weekly activity reports.
• Perform quality control on information collected at inspection stations.

Equipment Maintenance.

• Maintain vehicles, inspection station site, trailered electronic reader boards, and electronic tablets in a safe and working order.

Working Conditions:

Work setting: Approximately 80% field and 20% office. Work outdoors around water and on land, sometimes independently in remote locations, occasionally during inclement weather and/or air quality, day and night. Lifts/moves 75 pounds. Safely transport and operate equipment and tools.

Schedule: Work week will be Sunday to Saturday depending when check stations are scheduled, often on weekends and holidays, 10 hours a day, 40 hours a week. Occasionally will exceed the daily and weekly hours.

Travel requirements: May require travel throughout the state and overnight travel up to four days at times.

Customer Interactions: Interacts with the public at mandatory inspection stations for trailered watercraft and decontaminations of infested AIS watercraft.   Occasionally confronted with citizens that are non-compliant or not cooperative.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required Qualifications:

High school diploma or GED.

And

Three (3) months of natural resource related labor experience, or experience in any of the following: STEM Program, FFA, military, vocational program, general laborer, job corp, construction, maintenance, landscaping, boating experience, farming, agriculture, forestry, maintenance mechanic, or any type of manual labor, etc.

Or

One (1) year as a Natural Resource Worker 1.

Or

Equivalent education/experience.

License:  Valid driver’s license.

Special Requirements/Conditions of Employment:

Must be at least 18 years of age at the time of appointment.

May be required to pass criminal background check.

Incumbents may be required to obtain one or more specialized skill qualifications or licenses, including but not limited to: Watercraft Inspection Technician 1 (WIT1) and Watercraft Inspection Technician 2 (WIT2) Certified.

Preferred Qualifications:

In addition to the required qualifications, our ideal applicant will possess some or all the following:

Job knowledge to perform the essential activities of this position including:

• Experience conducting watercraft AIS inspections and/or decontamination of watercraft.
• Experience using computers, electronic tablets, and data collection applications.
• Experience working cooperatively with WDFW Law Enforcement.
• WSDOT Roadside Safety certification.
• Ability to work flexible schedule, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
• Associate degree in Biology, Fisheries, Wildlife Management, Natural Resources, Environmental Science, or closely related field of study.
