Bishop & Company is searching for an Archaeology Project Director in Guam.
Position Overview
The Project Director under the direction of the Project Manager and Principal Investigator, prepares and implements research designs, makes strategic and professional decisions in the field, and has oral and written communication skills as evidenced by completed technical reports and/or publications. The Project Director provides oversight and direction in the field; oversees the completion of all post-field tasks, including data management, laboratory work, drafting and GIS figure preparation, and writing; and has knowledge of basic statistical analyses and the ability to analyze and interpret data.
The Project Director has a master’s degree or higher with specialization in archaeology or related field, and at least five years of professional experience directing archaeological projects and applying archaeological theories, methods, and techniques.
Responsibilities:
- Project Planning and Organization
- Develop fieldwork strategies, selecting suitable methods and techniques.
- Prepare work plans.
- Data management.
- Project staffing, including ensuring staff have all required trainings and passes. Team Leadership
- Lead and coordinate a team of archaeologists and other professionals involved in the project.
- Supervise a team of archaeologists during fieldwork and post-field tasks. Provide in-field training, resolve problems, and evaluate performance.
- Regularly communicate with the PI regarding process, challenges (with proposed solution), and analytical questions. Surveys and Excavations
- Conduct archaeological surveys and excavations, ensuring accurate recording and interpretation of archaeological data. Participate in planning and coordinating schedules to accomplish fieldwork and project scope.
- Conduct Quality Assurance/Quality Checks (QA/QC) on field data. Regulatory Compliance
- Ensure compliance with relevant laws, regulations, and ethical guidelines related to archaeological practices.
- Complete work in accordance with the applicable Department of Defense, Federal, and State regulations and laws, particularly concerning historic/cultural preservation, endangered species, safety, and health. Stakeholder Management
- Manage relationships with stakeholders, including local communities, government agencies, and funding bodies.
- Reporting and Documentation:
- Prepare project plans and reports and present findings to professional peers and the public.
- Prepare site form.
Collection Management:
- With the Laboratory Manager, ensure the appropriate conservation and storage of archaeological collections. Publication Oversight:
- Oversee the publication of the project results in scholarly journals and other outlets.
Qualifications:
- Advanced degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or related field
- Strong knowledge of archaeological methods and theory
- Excellent organizational and leadership skills
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work in a variety of field conditions.
- Familiarity with GIS software and other relevant technology
- Experience in managing and supervising teams.
- A minimum of two years of CRM experience required.
- Pacific Islands or Asian Archaeology experience and bioarcheological experience will be viewed favorably.
- Must have a valid U.S. passport and U.S. REAL ID driver’s license, or valid work visa, and must be able to pass a background check for access to military installations.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe software, and digital field technologies (e.g., tablet and GPS)
- Work requires independent judgment/decision making, technical writing and organizational skills, attention to detail, and people skills.
- Travel Required
***The salary range for this position is $77k – 88k Annually***
