TPWD MISSION

To manage and conserve the natural and cultural resources of Texas and to provide hunting, fishing and outdoor recreation opportunities for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Under the direction of the Program Supervisor, this position is responsible for performing moderately complex (journey-level) archeological field, laboratory, and scientific research.  Work involves conducting archeological investigations, analyzing artifacts, processing collections, and organizing data.  Works under general supervision, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.  Performs additional duties as assigned.  Complies with all Agency, Division and Branch rules, regulation and procedures.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree or higher in Anthropology, Archeology, or closely related field;

Completion of an archeological field school.

Experience:

Two years increasingly responsible experience in archeological field investigations, laboratory analysis, and archeological collections processing work.

Licensure:

Must possess a class “C” Texas driver’s license.

NOTE:  Retention of position contingent upon obtaining and maintaining required license.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of archeological theory and methods;
  • Knowledge of archeological artifact processing standards;
  • Knowledge of archeological field methods;
  • Knowledge of preservation techniques;
  • Knowledge of laboratory procedures and analysis;
  • Skill in using MS Word, Excel, Access, and Outlook;
  • Skill in archeological field techniques;
  • Skill in recording archeological field data with global positioning system (GPS) technology;
  • Skill in archeological laboratory procedures and analyses;
  • Skill in effective verbal and written communication;
  • Skill in working as a member of a team, while establishing and maintaining effective work relationships with co-workers and work-related contacts;
  • Ability to walk long distances and perform physically demanding tasks in varying environments and conditions (steep terrain, heat, cold, etc.);
  • Ability to organize large amounts of data;
  • Ability to accurately follow instructions and meet deadlines;
  • Ability to adapt successfully and quickly to change and deliver quality results in a timely manner;
  • Ability to plan, organize and work independently, as well as within a team environment;
  • Ability to plan and organize research projects and fieldwork;
  • Ability to provide guidance to others;
  • Ability to conduct work activities in accordance with TPWD safety program.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Required to work from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday;
  • Required to work overtime, as necessary;
  • Required to travel 30% with possible overnight stays;
  • Must conform to TPWD dress and grooming standards, work rules, and safety procedures;
  • Required to operate a State vehicle;
  • Non-smoking environment in State buildings and vehicles.
