Location Details/Description: Saint-Gaudens National Historical Park - Cornish, NH

Saint-Gaudens National Historical Park preserves and interprets the home, artwork, properties, and life of renowned sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens and other artists within the Cornish Colony. It includes historic buildings like the Saint-Gaudens' family home and the sculptor's private studio, museum gallery spaces, classically inspired gardens, an extensive museum collection, recreational trails, and large bronze sculptures installed throughout the historic grounds. The park hosts a full-time sculptor-in-residence, summer concert series, and Sculptural Visions, a free arts festival each fall.

The park is located in Cornish, New Hampshire. This small town is situated along the Connecticut River which separates Vermont and New Hampshire. It is part of both the Upper Valley and Sugar River Region. New Hampshire has no income tax and no sales tax and has affordable communities nearby that offer an outstanding quality of life. Full-service communities near Cornish include Lebanon, Claremont, and Hanover, NH, and Windsor, White River Junction, Woodstock, and Springfield, VT. Cornish, NH is less than 2 hours from Burlington, VT and 2.5 hours from Boston. New York City is approximately 5 hours away and can also be reached by daily Amtrak and coach bus service.

Position Overview:

The Art Fellowship at Saint-Gaudens National Historical Park will advance several key projects related to the park's goal to engage visitors and students in art experiences. The Art Fellow will support arts-related programming for a variety of age and skill-levels including drop-in activities for park visitors, plein air and studio art demonstrations, education programs for field trips and youth programs, artist-in-residence-organized workshops, and outreach in partnership with organizations beyond park boundaries.

This individual placement is meant to facilitate professional development and promotes exposure to land management agencies and networking with professionals. This could include gaining experience in different conservation fields and shadowing different work groups.

Schedule: Fri-Tues, 8:30am - 5:00pm.

Position Benefits

Living Allowance: The ACE Member is expected to contribute ~40 hours/week and will receive a living allowance of $750/week to offset the costs of food and incidental expenses, dispersed bi-weekly.

Housing: Housing is the responsibility of the member and will not be provided..

Provided Training/Orientation: ACE members will receive position specific training and an orientation outlining ACE policies and procedures, clear guidance on prohibited activities, and networks for support. Specific training may include visitor services operations, safety, and working with youth.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Members must be a U.S. citizen or Permanent Resident, as required by U.S. government contracts
  • Willing and able to represent ACE and the partner organization in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner.
  • Ability to be both self-directed/work alone, and be a positive, contributing member of a group.
  • A current and valid form of ID (will be required to provide copies of ID's upon hiring)
  • Willing to undergo and must pass the required criminal history checks
  • Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • ACE Members will need to complete bi-weekly timesheets, beginning of term feedback forms, end of term evaluations and for longer terms, a mid-term evaluation.

Preferred:

  • Competitive applicants for this position can hold or be pursuing a degree in art, design, or a related field. and/or have relevant experience in subject areas such as the visual arts.
  • Knowledge of and experience with painting, sculpture, and other visual arts.
  • Experience working with youth.
  • Experience teaching, coaching or similar activities.
  • Ability and willingness to work outdoors.
  • Deep interest in the arts.

Physical Demands, Work Environment and Working Conditions:

  • Physical Demands: Requires frequent sitting, standing, walking, hiking, carrying, using hands to handle or feel, and reaching with hands and arms. Manual dexterity required for use of various tools, computer keyboard/mouse and other office equipment. Required to stoop, kneel, climb stairs, ladders, and/or crouch. Ability to traverse uneven and/or unpaved exterior areas throughout the park grounds.
  • Weight Lifted or Force Exerted: Frequently moves up to 15 pounds unassisted, ability to move up to 50 pounds with or without assistance.
  • Environmental: Outdoor and indoor conditions. Work environment conditions can change frequently. Often work will occur outside in sunny and hot conditions.
  • Noise Environment: Moderate noise such as in a business office with equipment and light traffic.

Environmental Conditions/Hazards: The ACE member may encounter environmental conditions/hazards including extreme heat and biting insects. The member is expected to conduct duties in a safe and orderly manner so as not to endanger self, fellow staff/members or resources.

Vehicle and Equipment Use/Safety: If a vehicle is required for the accomplishment of the duties, one will be provided by the the National Park Service or ACE. Any tools required for the accomplishment of the duties will be provided by the National Park Service. Use of personal protective equipment (PPE), typically provided by the National Park Service, will be mandatory for any activity that requires it. Strict adherence to The National Park Service and ACE equipment training, certification and safety protocols is required.
