Wildlands Engineering is seeking a motivated individual to assist our Asheville team through a hybrid Land Stewardship/Scientist summer internship position. We are looking for a student enrolled in a B.S. or M.S. program for environmental or biological sciences, landscape architecture, forestry, or related applicable scientific discipline or engineering discipline. The position is a paid, full-time, hourly internship that will include both office and field work.

BASIC FUNCTIONS:
Support existing conditions assessments, post-construction monitoring, and stewardship activities for stream and wetland restoration projects, primarily located in the piedmont and mountains of North Carolina. The Asheville Summer Intern will work closely with the Asheville Scientists and Stewardship teams at Wildlands Engineering, with additional opportunities to engage with the Asheville Design team to learn about restoration design principles. Responsibilities may include a range of field and office tasks, such as vegetation, geomorphic, and hydrologic assessments, data processing, invasive species management, streambank stabilization, plant identification, and GIS mapping. The role may also require driving vehicles and working independently in the field.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Ability to communicate effectively in both verbal and written formats with individuals or groups.
2. Ability to safely perform physical labor while outdoors in adverse conditions.
3. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
4. Ability to demonstrate strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
5. Ability to exercise discretion, independent judgment, and interact effectively with all levels of personnel.
6. Occasional overnight travel.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Assist with vegetation, geomorphic, and hydrologic assessments during existing conditions and post-construction monitoring.
2. Assist with spatial data collection using ArcGIS Online Field Maps.
3. Field data processing and analysis.
4. Monitor for and assist with removal and treatment of invasive species.
5. Assist with enhancement of restoration plantings through vegetation release and amending soil.
6. Monitor constructed stream restoration features and assist in repairs.
7. Assist with map figure production in ArcGIS Pro.
EDUCATION:
Two or more years of education with a minimum 3.0 GPA and an interest in water and natural resources, ecology, habitat restoration, field assessment, and/or environmental permitting.
EXPERIENCE / SKILLS:
1. Familiarity of various field monitoring protocols and surveying techniques is preferred.
2. Ability to work both independently and with others in field and office settings.
3. Knowledge of native and invasive plants of the southeast preferred.
4. Familiarity with ESRI products such as ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS Field Maps preferred.
5. Have a valid driver’s license.
6. PC/Windows-based software experience required with proficiency in Word and Excel.
7. Willing to work in rural settings in the vicinity of livestock.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
1. Up to eight hours of intermittent standing or walking outside on unleveled ground in a workday.
2. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds or carry heavy objects.
3. Ability to safely use herbicides and hand tools or willingness to learn.
4. The requirements of the job and the physical demands are frequently performed outdoors with exposure to insects, poison ivy, and adverse weather.
