Maine Audubon is hiring an experienced and dynamic leader to oversee our busy environmental education programs and retail operations at Scarborough Marsh Audubon Center (SMAC).  Since 1843, Maine Audubon has worked to conserve Maine wildlife and wildlife habitat by engaging people in education, conservation, and action.  The Scarborough Marsh Audubon Center has hosted a nature center and store, school programs, canoe/kayak rentals, nature tours, community science, interpretation, and other environmental education and community engagement programs within the 3,100 acre Scarborough Marsh estuary owned and managed by Maine Inland Fisheries & Wildlife for more than 50 years.

Position Overview

We are seeking a well-rounded, hands-on assistant manager to help oversee a busy canoe/kayak rental program, retail operations, and other community engagement activities that help diverse people and communities access and enjoy the natural world.  The SMAC Assistant Manager reports to the SMAC Manager and is responsible for helping them coordinate a small and diverse team of seasonal operational staff and volunteers.  SMAC serves 10,000 people annually through a robust calendar of daily operations, annual programs, and community partnerships.

In the spring, this position entails leading school groups in nature explorations on salt marsh ecology, scheduling and overseeing volunteers, and preparing for summer programs.  Once school is over, the responsibilities of this position shift and focus on the delivery of public programs about salt marsh ecology through nature explorations, canoe tours, and other programs.  In partnership with the Manager, this position will share responsibilities for greeting the public and maintaining the Center itself.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide a welcoming environment for all Maine Audubon visitors
  • Lead educational programming on a variety of marsh-related topics, both on foot and via canoe, for children and members of the public
  • Serve as a knowledgeable, friendly, and retail-savvy staff member
  • Operate a point of sale (POS) system including making sales and processing payments
  • Manage other staff and volunteers of all ages
  • Assist customers with boat rentals - from registration to boat launching
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of basic salt marsh ecological concepts, public education, and the Maine Audubon mission
  • Experience working with children
  • Able to use a computer-based point of sale system and handle cash and receipts
  • Friendly, high energy, and good sense of humor
  • Able to take direction but also work independently and have an attention to details
  • Comfortable communicating with a wide variety of individuals and groups, including adult and teen volunteers
  • Willingness to work outdoors in challenging environmental conditions
  • Comfortable operating canoes, including lifting and paddling against wind and current
  • CPR and First Aid certification

Physical Requirements/ Working Conditions

  • Able to stand for extended periods of time
  • Able to lift 75-pound canoe with another person, carry that canoe 30 feet, and put the canoe up on a rack
  • Able to operate canoes or learn how to, including how to canoe against wind and current

Timing, Compensation, and Benefits
