The McDaniel Environmental Center is a 58-acre property that supports the college’s mission and has become a student-powered hub for collaborative research, experiential learning, and outdoor service opportunities. The property is a 15-minute drive from McDaniel’s main campus and features three historic residences, two ponds, a creek, and several acres of fields and forested land. Since McDaniel College acquired the property in the late 1980s, it has transformed into a creative space for students to make an impact in landscape management, sustainable agricultural production, wetland restoration, student-faculty research, and community engagement.

Job Description:
The Environmental Studies Department at McDaniel College invites applications for an Assistant Professor (PhD) beginning Fall 2025. The successful applicant will have a specialization in Wildlife Ecology, Wildlife Management, Forest Ecology, Conservation Sciences, or a closely related field. McDaniel College is located in the Maryland Piedmont region close to the Catoctin Mountains, Chesapeake Bay, and many forested lands in Pennsylvania. The teaching and/or research program(s) of the employee should be relevant to one of these landscapes.
The teaching load will be 3 4-credit courses each semester. Courses that are expected to be taught are introductory courses in Environmental Studies, upper-level courses related to the employee’s specialization, Wildlife Ecology or Management, and the department’s Junior and Senior Seminars (on rotation). Additionally, the successful applicant will utilize the McDaniel Environmental Center to offer unique experiential learning, student-faculty research, and/or other opportunities.
Teaching is the primary requirement. A continuing, active research program is required, as is participation in Departmental and College-wide service activities. Candidates should have experience in, or the potential for, building an equitable and inclusive scholarly environment in teaching, research, mentoring, and service.
Requirements:
- PhD in Wildlife Ecology, Wildlife Management, Forest Ecology, Conservation Sciences, or related field. Advanced ABD will be considered.
- In depth knowledge of current issues relating to wildlife, forestry, and/or conservation sciences, and extensive field research experience, including strong quantitative skills.
- Demonstrated capacity to teach undergraduate courses using effective and innovative teaching approaches, with strong focus on inclusive teaching and student success.
- Demonstrated capacity to develop a research program that is both relevant regionally and recognized nationally, and includes potential for experiential opportunities for undergraduate students.
- Willingness to collaborate with colleagues, advise undergraduate students, and participate in faculty service and governance.
- Demonstrate oral and written communication skills relevant to scientific and applied audiences.
