Avian Field Technician- Rhode Island

Position Description: The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (RIDEM), Division of Fish and Wildlife is seeking (1) technician to work under the Non-game Bird Biologist. This is an excellent opportunity for individuals looking for hands-on experience in wildlife management and a great way to gain knowledge on the inner workings of a state wildlife agency.
The technician will assist with a variety of initiatives including but not limited to: colonial waterbird surveys, American Goshawk surveys, Saltmarsh Habitat and Avian Research Program (SHARP) avian and vegetation surveys, Saltmarsh Sparrow banding and nest monitoring, International Shorebird Surveys (ISS), and fall migration monitoring. The technician will also provide assistance to other programs, such as waterfowl and upland gamebirds, as necessary.
Applicants should expect an intensive field schedule and early start times. Applicants should be comfortable kayaking and walking through saltmarsh environments. A strong candidate will possess a good work ethic and attitude, and be able to withstand long days in varying weather conditions.
Requirements: Applicants must have or be working towards a degree in a natural resources- related field, or have equivalent experience; a valid driver's license; ability to withstand long working days in the field; a commitment to a 35-hour work week. Previous experience with birds is strongly preferred. Banding experience is valued, but not required.
Position Dates: This is a 6-month position beginning in April/May. The start date is flexible.
Salary: $16.50/hour. Housing is not provided. Local candidates within commuting distance of West Kingston, RI are encouraged to apply.
