POSITION SUMMARY

The Base Camp Coordinator (BCC) is a seasonal, part-time position located out of Wilderness Inquiry’s 40-acre base camp on the Bayfield Peninsula near Little Sand Bay, Wisconsin. 

The BCC embraces our values by creating a welcoming and safe environment for all our guests. This position’s first priority is the proper care of our grounds, facilities and equipment. The BCC reports directly to and works alongside the Sea Kayak Program Manager. Together they prepare and execute each of our trips with the help of our Outdoor Leaders. Together, they all play a crucial role in providing positive experiences for all our participants.

SUPERVISOR:

 Sea Kayak Program Manager

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Ensure the base camp grounds are clean and orderly
  • Assist the Sea Kayak Program Manager in maintaining the inventory and quality of our warehouse, vans, trailers and kayaks/gear. This includes assisting OL packing in and out for their trips, organizing, inventorying, cleaning equipment, and making repairs when possible. 
  • Maintain cleanliness and ensure facilities are in working order. That includes: Composting toilets, outdoor showers, campsites, pavilion area, Grillzebo, warehouse, and other outbuildings on the property.
  • Keep campsites, trails, base camp roads, and common areas clear and safe for participants and staff. This includes: grounds maintenance, clearing brush and downed trees, ensuring trails have adequate amounts of mulch and roads have adequate gravel throughout.
  • Depending on staff’s abilities, special projects such as painting, staining, building and woodworking on property may also be requested as needed. 
  • Ensure program compliance with Wilderness Inquiry policies and risk management procedures
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the variety and complexities of relationships Wilderness Inquiry audiences may have with the outdoors based on race, gender, experiences, age, and backgrounds. 
  • Accurately and professionally represent the Wilderness Inquiry brand to program partners, participants, media, and the public.
  • Uphold Wilderness Inquiry’s Trail Community Agreements

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Current driver’s license and safe driving record dating back 5 years.
  • The ability to plan, implement and follow through with responsibilities is essential. 
  • The ability to oversee projects independently and as part of a team and utilize strong communication skills. 
  • Must be interested in working a job with elements that can be physically demanding. 
  • Must be willing to keep flexible hours.
  • Must pass a background check.

  • While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to sit; talk or hear; and use hands to handle, or touch objects or controls. The employee is regularly required to stand and walk. On a regular occasion the employee may be required to stoop, bend or reach above the shoulders. Must be able to lift and carry heavy loads up to 50lbs over rough terrain for distances of up to 1,000 feet. To meet the demands of the job, the employee must be able to make loud verbal commands, sit and stand for significant periods of time while also directing vessels such as a canoe or kayak, use vision to directionally navigate safely, and endure a wide variety of temperatures and elements. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

TIME/COMPENSATION 

Seasonal summer position, 25-40 hours per week. Preferred days are Sunday-Thursday. Exact start and end dates are flexible but should be available approximately May 20 to Sept 6. Compensation starts at $22/hr.
