Bay Area Community Program Manager

The Student Conservation Association (SCA) has a mission to create the next generation of conservation leaders. Historically, youth, and particularly youth from under-represented and low-income communities, have not been entrusted with positions of leadership or given the opportunities to create change. SCA is committed to changing this dynamic in the DC metro area and across the country.

Position Summary

The SCA provides an array of community programming across the country. The Bay Area Community Program Manager is responsible for the safe, complete, and successful execution of SCA’s various programs in and around the Bay Area in accordance with the uniform practices and procedures established by SCA and the Bay Area City Director. This person helps recruit for Community crew leaders and members and ensures they are equipped for successful work delivery, comply with curriculum/funder mandates, safety controls, logistical program needs, and mandatory internal record-keeping and administrative requirements. SCA is looking for candidates with an understanding of the social and emotional needs of the youth in this program and the local needs of the community in which they serve. They serve as a mentor and role model for not only the youth and young adults in the program, but also the community at large. This position reports to the Bay Area City Director and supervises one Program Coordinator and seasonal Program Assistants.  This is a hybrid position - option to work from home or SCA’s Berkeley-based office. Approximately 50% of time in person in the field with leaders, crews, partners, and events. This is a full-time position with a salary range of $60,000- $66,000 that can start as early as June 2024.

Roles and Responsibilities

External Engagement:

  • In collaboration with the Bay Area City Director, strengthen network of community partners (schools and youth-serving organizations) and land managers in the Bay Area in order to scale programming and provide future opportunities for SCA and youth involved in our programs.
  • Represent SCA at local and regional events, and at national conferences and trainings as needed.
  • Support Bay Area City Director and SCA’s Business Development teams to secure funds needed for local programming, including assistance with grant proposals and reporting.
  • Work in collaboration with Bay Area City Director to engage the community and SCA alumni.

Recruiting & Onboarding:

  • Ensure crew leaders receive sufficient training and orientation.
  • Ensure crew leaders and members are readily equipped with, or have access to, necessary supplies and other logistical requirements.
  • Lead local recruitment efforts of leaders and members, which will occasionally include attending events outside normal business hours.
  • Assist HR and Program Coordinator with the onboarding of leaders and members.

Program Planning & Delivery:

  • Perform administrative and field-based functions necessary for the successful implementation of programs.
  • Manage and supervise Bay Area Program Coordinator focused on program implementation.
  • Create service plans that are in line with standardized program models.
  • Monitor program delivery for successful curriculum, safety outcomes, and administrative compliance.
  • Plan and organize project logistics prior to program start, in coordination with host partners.
  • Ensure timesheets are completed bi-weekly by all program participants and leaders, program reports/summaries are submitted regularly, receipts are properly submitted, coded and approved, and that all other SCA administrative requirements are met by crew leaders.
  • Report, track, and respond to incidents in accordance with SCA policies and procedures.
  • Assist SCA’s Training Department with member, leader, and staff training.
  • Manage equipment and gear cache.
  • Support program budget creation and ensure budgets are economically managed and met in accordance with financial expectations.
  • Responsible for ongoing field support and rotating emergency responder.
  • Responsible for modeling, facilitating, and building an inclusive community.

Experience and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in related field preferred or relevant coursework/work experience related to the specific field preferred.
  • At least 5 years of progressively responsible experience including skills related to the position such as program coordination, leadership in an outdoor setting, experience working with programmatic partners, and grant/budget management.
  • Experience working in conservation and strong technical outdoor skills (experience as a former crew leader is a plus).
  • Strong written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills when working with various external and internal partners.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Highly resourceful team-player, with the ability to also be extremely effective independently.
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced environment and dealing with unexpected circumstances as they arise.
  • Experience working with youth and young adults from racially and socioeconomically diverse backgrounds.
  • Local resident and understanding of community needs in the Bay Area.
  • Experience with basic budget development and management.
  • Basic First Aid and Adult CPR certifications or ability to obtain before start date.
  • Ability to handle confidential information with discretion, be adaptable to various competing demands, and demonstrate a high level of customer/client service and response.
  • Ability to lead, manage, and develop a team to reach desired outcomes and goals.
  • Ability to occasionally work after hours and weekends, depending on need.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office Suite, Google products, Salesforce, Volunteer/Customer Relationship Management Software or willingness to learn new software.

Travel Requirements

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and have a Motor Vehicle Record that meets SCA standards.
  • Excellent driving record and ability to drive in a variety of conditions including city driving and/or use of four-wheel drive as well as standard transmission as needed.
  • Some overnight and weekend travel is required to support programs.

Supervisory responsibilities

This position manages other employees and is responsible for the performance management and adequate hiring of those employees.
