Key Details:

  • Compensation: $19-21/hour, depending on experience
  • Housing: Housing will be provided for non-local candidates
  • Start Date: March 14, 2025
  • End Date: June 10, 2025
  • Location: North-Central Texas (based out of Abilene)
  • Additional Details: Two people will work on one project site from March 14 – April 22 and two other people will work on a different project site from March 28 – June 10. Vehicle will be provided or mileage reimbursed. GPS units and other field equipment will be provided by WEST; however, field technicians must be equipped with suitable footwear (rugged hiking boots) and binoculars.

Job Description:
Primary duties involve:

  • Conducting nest searches and nest monitoring for all bird species.
  • Fieldwork will require long days in a range of temperatures and wind speeds.
  • Candidate must be able to identify Texas birds by sight and be comfortable with hazards typical of the environment (sharp vegetation, driving a four-wheel drive vehicle, dust, extreme heat and cold).
  • Job duties require use of compass, and Global Positioning System devices.
  • Some training will be provided.
  • An average work week may include 30-40 hours, though some weeks could require shorter or longer hours.

Job Requirements

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in natural resources, wildlife management, wildlife biology or equivalent degree preferred.
  •  Must be proficient at identifying Texas bird species by sight and able to work independently and interact positively with project manager, field supervisor, construction crews, and other technicians.
  • Candidates experienced in nest searching will be given preference.
  • Employee must be able to appear for work on time (surveys often begin as early as sunrise) ; Maintain focus for long periods of time; Follow instructions from manager and team leader; Maintain positive attitude and accept guidance and constructive criticism. Precise and thorough data collection is essential.

Physical Requirements:

  • Applicants must be in good physical condition, as surveys will be conducted in locations where temperatures and conditions can be extreme.

After an offer of employment is made, the candidate must successfully pass a pre-employment background check, drug screening, and a DMV records check that meets WEST’s minimum criteria to operate a motor vehicle on behalf of the company.  A valid driver’s license will be required. Candidates must adhere to all health and safety requirements.
