Job Description:
Help the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife fulfill its mission: To protect and enhance Oregon's fish and wildlife and their habitats for use and enjoyment by present and future generations.
Note: this position will receive a Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) increase of 6.55% which is not reflected in the salary listed in this posting. The effective date of the increase is January 1, 2025 for February 1, 2025 paychecks.
We are hiring for one full time, Limited Duration position located in Newport, Oregon. The duration of this assignment is through June 30, 2025.
We will also consider a Job Rotation for current, regular status employees of the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife in good standing in a permanent or limited duration position (not temporary or seasonal) that is expected to continue through at least June 30, 2025. What you will do:
The primary purpose of this position is to provide field work on Oregon Plan monitoring projects. This position is principally in support of adult and smolt monitoring activities at Life Cycle Monitoring sites and coast wide habitat inventories. The projects’ major activities include monitoring upstream and downstream fish traps and conducting field surveys to assess the condition of stream habitat. The position will also be responsible for quality control of the information, writing summaries of sampling results, maintaining field gear and equipment, coordinating with ODFW district staff, and requesting permission from private landowners to access sample sites.
Working Conditions:
Position requires frequent long distance travel to study sites and work in remote areas. Position requires operating traps and handling fish in inclement weather. Work will involve communicating effectively with ODFW, other government agencies, private timber companies, private landowners, and members of the public.
This position requires a flexible work schedule that varies in the number of hours worked on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, or a work schedule in which the starting and stopping times vary on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, and does not exceed forty (40) hours in a workweek. Work exceeding 40 hours per week requires prior approval by the supervisor.

Requirements/Requested Skills: Minimum qualifications are not established for this position and recent graduates or early career professionals are encouraged to apply. In general, we are seeking applicants with the following related skills and experience: smolt trap operation, identifying juvenile fish species (especially salmonids), collecting and accurately recording field data, computer skills, 4X4 vehicle operation, PIT tagging, and anyone who possess or is in pursuit of a Fisheries or Wildlife Science degree or related degree in biological/ecological sciences. Preference for interviews may be given to candidates with this background.
