Biologists conduct fisheries, wildlife and/or habitat management projects and research studies including data collection, analysis and interpretation; develop and implement project proposals and work plans; prepare recommendations; and participate in public relations activities.
Incumbents perform in a trainee capacity and acquire the knowledge, skills and abilities required in this occupation. OR Incumbents perform basic tasks or elements of the job not requiring the additional knowledge, skills and abilities to perform at the next level in the series.
This position within the Fisheries Division at Nevada Department of Wildlife is responsible for multiple sportfish waters in Humboldt and Pershing counties.
Primary sportfish duties generally include: population inventory, fish introductions, fish eradication projects, angler surveys, completion of annual reports for each water, development and review of fishing season and stocking recommendations, fish hauling and stocking, and coordination with local wildlife CABs (County Advisory Board) and sportsmen's groups.
This position is also responsible for the management of Alvord Chub, a state protected species as well as functions as the principal coordinator of implementing Lahontan Cutthroat Trout recovery activities for the North Fork Little Humboldt River Sub-basin.
Recovery activities may consist of population surveys, analyzing survey results, completing technical reports, evaluating land management plans and activities, eradication projects, reintroductions, genetic monitoring, and participating in Recovery Implementation team meetings.
Other responsibilities consist of presenting Department recommendations and informational programs to the public, evaluating habitat conditions, trapping and transplanting wildlife, and performing species and fisheries management planning. This position is principal liaison with local offices of BLM and US Forest Service and helps to determine potential funding for a variety of projects.
This position also performs habitat functions and conservation education on occasion.
