The Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands Division of Fish and Wildlife is looking to hire a Biologist to conduct population assessments of Cycas micronesica on Rota. The incumbent will work under the Endangered Species Program under the project titled “Step to the Recovery of Fadang on Rota.” This position is under the direct supervision of the Endangered Species Program Manager. This person should have experience with study design, population modeling, data management, and public outreach. Population assessments will be conducted on field treks through variable environments in Rota. Thus, someone with adequate fitness and experience with population studies and data management is ideal.  Regular written reports are expected. Potential to publish findings if motivated. This position is located on Rota.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES:

1.  Plans and designs population monitoring and assessments of Cycas micronesica on Rota

2.  Organize, analyze, and interpret data collected.

3.  Prepares and submits reports and publications.

4.  Supervises data collection and assists with plant surveys: search for and map locations of endangered Fadang in remote areas in Rota.

5. Collect seeds from wild, propagate and tends to plants in nursery (Water, weed, pest control)

6. Out-plant propagated plants in wild urban areas and private lands.

7.  Monitor out-planted individuals and weed area around plants and monitor (daily/weekly plant checks) its health.

8. Clean, maintain, repair, organize and inventory equipment and supplies.

9. Able to hike and work in rough and remote terrain in heat and rain with no access to comfort facilities.

10. Take personal initiative and manage time efficiency.

11. Participate in community outreach and education.

12. Assist the Endangered Species Program Manager with assigned tasks.

Minimum Qualifications: 

-Bachelor’s degree in Biology or related field.

At least two (2) years of related field work experience.  

Examples:

1-2 years’ population monitoring/research experience, 
1-2 years’ experience with technical writing and database management

Potential candidates should be detailed oriented, organized, and have excellent oral and written communication skills.

This is a temporary position for up to two years. Project may be extended if staff are motivated and funding is secured.
