Birding Outreach Coordinator/Ornithologist (Full-Time)

The Toledo Zoo is currently seeking a Birding Outreach Coordinator/Ornithologist. The successful candidate will have a passion for birding and exceptional interpersonal skills to engage tour participants, guests, and donors.
The position is responsible for developing, promoting, and leading programs in public outreach for bird-watching, avian citizen science, and wildlife viewing tours. Special emphasis will be placed on developing these programs for the local and national markets. Meet the Zoo’s strategic interests and apply metrics to the programs for evaluation.
Design and plan fun, engaging programs which inspire participants to continue support and value of wildlife. Planning includes defining purpose, itinerary, and cost for excursions. Develop workshops and class opportunities for various groups. Develop programming to engage with birding, bird-feeding, developing bird-friendly habitat, etc. Network and assist to develop a constituency of Ohio and Michigan birders who both engage in our programs, understand the nature of the Toledo Zoo’s avian conservation and habitat restoration programs, and support the Zoo’s mission.
This position is exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act and requires time worked in excess of forty hours per week.
Minimum Training and Experience
- Significant experience and skill in birding and bird identification.
- Significant prior experience or degree in ecotourism and environmental outreach or related field.
- Enjoys interacting with people from various backgrounds and diverse backgrounds/ages.
- Must have a valid drivers’ license and be insurable by the fleet insurance carrier.
- Ability to acquire a valid US passport preferred.
- The Toledo Zoo is a drug-free workplace, including marijuana.
