IMPORTANT: Candidates must have prior direct field experience with the California Red-legged Frog (CRLF) to qualify for this position.

 

JOB SUMMARY

The California Red-legged Frog (CRLF) Biologist will rotate shifts with a team of professional biologists, at a remote

railroad infrastructure construction Project on Vandenberg Space Force Base, Santa Barbara County. A typical

schedule is four 10-hour shifts per week but may be asked to work over 40-hours. Weekend and night work may be

scheduled as needed. This Project is expected to conclude in November 2025.The CRLF Biologist may also be

asked to work on other projects as needed around the Central Coast of California and surrounding areas.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Communicate effectively with construction contractors,
  • Conduct daily, early-morning presence/absence surveys for CRLF that may be present in the construction zones. Ability to safely relocate species, if present.
  • Monitor daily, construction areas for wildlife, especially avian species, mammals, reptiles.
  • Capture and relocate wildlife in harm’s way, including rattlesnakes.
  • Implement and enforce Project permit conditions to ensure biological compliance measures are executed effectively.
  • Ability to document and communicate daily observations using Microsoft Word, Microsoft Outlook, and SharePoint
  • Conduct avian resource nesting survey
  • Communicate Project needs to project manager and internal team of CRLF biologists, other environmental professionals, client representatives, construction contractors, VSFB representatives, and responsible agencies
  • Identify local flora and fauna
  • Research environmental effects of Project and identify methods or techniques to improve or maintain environmental conditions
  • Review a Project construction plans, permits, and environmental documentation
  • Write summaries of biological constraints
  • Prepare biological/technical reports and assist with project management
  • Provide groundwork for regulatory permit applications

ADDITIONAL DUTIES

  • Provide support in other departments/projects when needed.
  • Assigned as the onsite Lead when required.

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Education - Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Biology, Botany, Environmental Sciences, Natural Resources or Wildlife Management or related experience.
  • Experience - 5 to 10 years related experience in biology, botany, wildlife, endangered species management. Minimum 2-years of professional field experience with CRLF, sufficient to qualify as a Qualified Biologist under USFWS standards.
  • Knowledge - Advanced field experience and knowledge in recognizing wildlife and plants throughout Santa Barbara County region and California’s Central Coast.
  • Skills - Proficient analytical, data management and technical writing skills. Must be able to keep precise, accurate and legible field notes.
  • Abilities - Able to write clear and concise reports, and able to keep accurate field notes during monitoring and field work. Accomplished leadership skills. Organized in managing multiple projects.
  • Certifications - Certification to handle applicable threatened species from other projects a plus. Must also have a valid California Driver’s license.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

Physical Requirements - Occasionally able to lift, pull or push up to 50 lbs. Will sit, stand or walk short distances for up to the entire duration of a shift. Able to wear personal protective equipment (including but not limited to; work boots, gloves, safety glasses, hearing protection and respirator).

Mental Effort - Moderate mental ability to collect data and communicate effectively with others

Working Conditions - Must be able to work outside for long hours when needed in variable weather conditions (windy, rainy, cold to 10 degrees F, heat to 110 degrees F).
