Caretaker for Camp Double Bear

Land Trust Santa Cruz County

Boulder Creek, California

Job Type Unpaid
Salary Details volunteer position
Deadline Dec 17, 2024
Experience 0 - 1 years

Have you ever wanted to spend time in a redwood forest?  Come live in the Santa Cruz mountains from November-April!

The Land Trust of Santa County, a conservation non-profit, is looking for a caretaker for Camp Double Bear. This camp was created by two wonderful conservationists who were inspired by the Burning Man festival. The camp is beautiful!

The property is listed for sale and is not in operation.  Caretaker housing will be provided on the property. The camp features multiple structures and amenities and the caretaker’s primary role will be to act as our eyes and ears, conducting daily walkthroughs to check for signs of trespass, vandalism, maintenance issues, or damage from wildlife. The role involves volunteering approximately 8 hours per week, and the caretaker will report back to Land Trust staff if there are problems.

The property is off-grid with a spring fed, pump-to-tank gravity water system and an extensive solar array. We hope to find someone who can learn enough about these systems to troubleshoot the utilities while living onsite.

The camp is located in a remote area but is only 20 minutes from Los Gatos and 35 minutes to the beautiful Santa Cruz beaches.  A portion of this drive is on an unpaved road.  There are several options for housing on the property.  There is a powerful cell booster but no Wi-Fi.

The optimal candidate is someone with a desire for nature connection and an ability to live remotely.  Walking is primarily on even surfaces, but a reasonable level of fitness is required to hike uphill. Remote work or an offsite job is permitted, as this is a volunteer role with housing as the sole benefit.
