The Center for Birds of Prey is home to a diverse collection of birds of prey, vultures and storks from around the world.  Comprising approximately 100 individuals from 50 species, the collection is utilized in educational programming, captive propagation and research. Interns will be involved in all aspects of the care, husbandry and training of the collection as well as in the utilization of the birds in educational programming both on our Awendaw, SC campus and throughout the broader community. 

Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

• Assist in the coordination and performance of all aspects of basic husbandry and routine care for the resident birds:
• Cleaning and maintenance of enclosure spaces
• Preparation of daily diets
• Assist with regular health checks for resident birds
• Enter daily data into RaptorMed database
• Perform all educational program duties in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations and act as an Ambassador for the Center and its mission.
• Assist in the training of working birds and developing educational presentations as needed.
• Present or assist in the presentation of on-site and off-site programs. 
• Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned. 

Job Requirements:

• Must have a valid driver’s license 
• Must have a degree in or be working towards a degree in biology, education, or related field. 
• Must be able to lift 50 pounds and stand for long periods of time. 
• Must be able to work outside in all types of weather. 
• Must have a strong work ethic and positive attitude. 
• Must be able to commit to 40 hrs per week (full time internship) or 20 hrs per week (part time internship).

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience in this field is not required, but some animal related experience is helpful. We are willing to train qualified candidates. 
• Preference given to those seeking a career in environmental education or animal husbandry. 
• Must be a self-starter and be amenable to unpredictable and often long hours due to the nature of the work. 
• Must be flexible in working with a wide variety of volunteers and staff. 
• Must have a willingness to learn. 

Interns are accepted based on the deadline schedule throughout the year. Applications for internships are accepted year round. 

Interns will be scheduled for a 40-hour week with 5 days/8 hour schedule for full time internships and a 20-hour with a 2-3 day/8 hour schedule. Some weekends and holidays may be required.  We are currently hiring for our Spring Season which is February- April. 

This internship offers a stipend to interns at the completion of their internship based on their performance, hours worked, etc. Housing is currently not offered through the Center.
