Chief of Plants and Science
Kirtland and Cleveland, OH
After close to a century as separate institutions, the Holden Arboretum and Cleveland Botanical Garden integrated to form Holden Forests & Gardens (HF&G) in 2014. As HF&G, the organization was restructured as a single management team in 2018, and all human, financial, programmatic assets, and collections were combined to create a dynamic and impactful plant museum spanning multiple campuses and serving the people of northeast Ohio and beyond.
Holden Forests & Gardens is one of the largest public gardens in the United States. Offering distinct arboretum and botanical garden experiences for the public along with a private plant breeding research site, HF&G is like no other public garden in the country.
The Chief of Plants and Science will have the benefit of entering a science-based organization that blends science and conservation to inspire action. HF&G has engaged in substantial planning work, and the Chief of Plants and Science will be able to build off this foundation, while also having the opportunity to lend their expertise to further the impact of the institution. The Chief of Plants and Science will lead and integrate the horticultural and scientific initiatives at the Cleveland Botanical Garden, Holden Arboretum, and Leach Research Station, driving the quality and growth of HF&Gs horticulture, living collections, research, community forestry, and conservation programs to be recognized as among the best in the world.
The Chief of Plants and Science will be a strategic and dynamic individual who has the ability to create and drive measurable goals and organizational health. The candidate should be skilled at leading change and supporting a culture of accountability. In addition, they will represent HF&G at local and national meetings, lead tours, and serve as a spokesperson to diverse public and professional audiences regarding plant collections, horticulture, arboriculture, science, and conservation.
Minimum requirements include a master’s degree in horticulture, ecology, botany or related plant science field from an accredited university and 8 years’ experience in horticultural, ecological, or conservation research with at least 5 years of management experience. A Ph.D. degree is desirable.

A commitment to the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion is required.
The compensation range for this position annually is between $170,000 - $190,000. HF&G offers generous health insurance, retirement, PTO and other benefits.
