Dauphin Island Sea Lab

Dauphin Island, Alabama

Deadline May 02, 2025

We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic intern in Dr. Ron Baker’s lab (https://bakerlab.wixsite.com/baker-lab) based at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab (www.disl.edu).  This internship is designed to facilitate an in-depth understanding of ecological sampling techniques, subsequent sample processing, and their practical applications. As such, interns will develop their skills in data collection and gain valuable field experience. The position will be a full-time 6-month internship with a 3-month probationary period, and the potential for extensions based on performance. Preferred start date is June 2, 2025, but can be flexible for the right candidate. Salary is $16.50/hr.

The internship offers comprehensive training in various ecological sampling methods such as fisheries surveys (underwater videos, throw traps, seine nets), wetland vegetation monitoring, bivalve surveys, and topographical mapping. Interns will also learn to process samples such as fisheries video surveys, benthic infauna, sediment, and nekton drop sampling samples. Field research will be mostly along the Alabama coast with some field days characterized by long days of physically demanding fieldwork and potentially arduous conditions. In addition, interns will be encouraged to attend seminars on current topics in marine science hosted at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab and the University of South Alabama.
