Expected to start May/June, 3-month duration, 28-40 hrs. a week.
Location: Natural Resources Building- Olympia, WA.

The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has an exciting opportunity within our Communications Division. Are you majoring in journalism, social media networking, and communications, and do you want to gain first-hand, real-world experience working in natural resource management? If so, you may be perfect for the DNR Communications Volunteer Intern Program. DNR works with various media outlets to inform the public about the assortment of natural resource-related issues, including forestry, fire prevention, Puget Sound and other aquatic restoration projects, geology, recreation, and environmental education. This opportunity with DNR offers an intern valuable networking possibilities and on-the-job experience. The intern will work closely with our Communication Managers to complete a series of campaigns.

Responsibilities:
Web

  • Build and edit webpages in Drupal 10 – www.dnr.wa.gov
  • Build and edit webpages in SharePoint

Social Media Content

  • Prep content, with staff coaching, for agency social media sites
  • Assist with archive, backup, and processing stats for social media tools
  • Contribute to weekly social media planning

Multimedia/Writing

  • Video/audio project assignments
  • Write blogs with staff coaching 
  • May assist with News Releases, Media Advisories, or talking points with coaching
  • Photo assignments

Inter-disciplinary Communications

  • Works as a productive member of a team
  • Learns professional communications in a workplace experience
  • Network with other professionals

NOTE: The volunteer internship can be structured for students earning college credit.Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • A current student in an undergraduate or graduate program majoring in journalism, social media networking, communications, or a related field.
  •  At least 18 years of age at the time of hire.
