GENERAL DESCRIPTION

This position is responsible for the planning, implementation, coordination, and continual improvement of the statewide conservation education program in schools, in coordination with education partners, the Game and Fish, and the public. This includes leading or assisting with programs such as Trout in the Classroom, National Archery in Schools, Hunter Education, Project WILD, and other conservation education programming, including summer camps. This position collaborates with the education team to create professional development and resources for teachers in the realm of wildlife, fisheries, habitat, and conservation. This position acts as a liaison with the Department of Education, Professional Standards Teaching Board, UW College of Education, and other education entities within the state. This position works closely with the other members of the education team and Communications and Education Division to plan and execute statewide education, outreach events, and summer camps.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed at the job level.

  • Administer the statewide conservation education programs in schools in coordination with education partners and the education team.
  • Serve as the Wyoming Trout in the Classroom (TIC) coordinator. This involves leading the partnership with Trout Unlimited (TU) to administer the national TIC program across the state, including an annual school application and selection process, coordinating egg/food delivery, developing and sharing curricular materials with teachers, supporting teachers throughout the process,  maintaining approved release sites; and administering the grant process with TU.
  • Generate and manage curricular and physical resources for teachers. This includes administering the Conservation Crate program statewide, curating educational resources on the website and in print, and associated tracking and reporting.
  • Provide professional development for teachers in the realm of wildlife, habitat, and conservation.
  • Coordinate in-school education programming and serve as liaison with education partners.
  • Facilitate Project WILD workshops for teachers around the state; promote the curriculum within Wyoming schools and pursue grant opportunities when applicable.
  • Provide high-quality customer service to educators and the public
  • Purchase, inventory, maintain, and distribute conservation education materials to instructors statewide.
  • Provide educators with up-to-date and easy-to-access resources, including lesson plans, digital content, and physical resources.
  • Track conservation education resource demand across the state and ensure that resources are being allocated commensurate to demand
  • Support the National Archery in Schools Program by hosting training workshops and assisting at the state tournament.
  • Assist with hunter recruitment and retention programming, conservation education programming, hunter education, and other statewide education and outreach efforts and/or events.
  • Become certified as a hunter education instructor and support the hunter education in schools initiative. 
  • Assist the education team with facilitating summer camp programming for youth, women, and families.
  • Provide help to the greater communications and education division as needed. 
  • Co-lead the Wyoming Outdoor Weekend and other regional events with the Lander region information and education specialist
  • Work together with Lander region information and education specialists to fulfill education needs in the region.

Qualifications

PREFERENCES/**AGENCY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Preference may be given to those who have a bachelor's degree in education, natural resources, outdoor recreation, or related field.
  • Preference may be given to those who have experience with public speaking and teaching diverse audiences across a wide range of ages. 
  • Preference may be given to those who have experience developing curriculum and educational resources.
  • Preference may be given to those who have experience in coordinating large programs with multiple partners.
  • Preference may be given to those with expertise in experiential, place-based, or outdoor education.

**Must have a valid driver's license.

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Knowledge of and experience with social science theories and research methodologies.
  • Knowledge of and experience with public participation techniques.
  • Knowledge of wildlife management and conservation principles.
  • Knowledge of strategic planning practices.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Bachelor's Degree (typically in Education) Experience:0-3 years of progressive work experience (typically in Education or Instruction) with acquired knowledge at the level of an Education Program Specialist.

OR Education & Experience Substitution:4-6 years of progressive work experience (typically in Education or Instruction) with acquired knowledge at the level of an Education Program Specialist. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:None

PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Must be able to lift 40 lbs., and be able to work some evenings and weekends.
  • Travel within the state is expected
