Description: SPCA Westchester is seeking enthusiastic and environmentally-conscious individuals to join our team as Environmental Interns. This un-paid internship opportunity is ideal for high school and college students interested in gaining hands-on experience in environmental conservation and management while contributing to the welfare of animals in our care.

Responsibilities:

  • Documenting and Monitoring Species: Conduct regular surveys to document both native and invasive species within the shelter's premises, with a focus on wetland areas. Record observations using appropriate tools and methods, such as GPS devices, camera traps, or field journals.
  • Invasive Species Removal: Assist in the identification and removal of invasive plant species from the shelter's grounds. Utilize safe and environmentally-friendly methods to control invasive species and restore native habitats.
  • Outdoor Fieldwork: Perform tasks primarily outdoors, involving exposure to various weather conditions, including heat, rain, and unstable ground. Be prepared to navigate natural landscapes while conducting surveys and removal activities.
  • Data Collection and Analysis: Compile and organize collected data for analysis and reporting purposes. Collaborate with SPCA staff to assess the impact of environmental initiatives on local biodiversity and ecosystem health.
  • Safety and Risk Management: Adhere to safety protocols and procedures to minimize risks associated with outdoor work, such as tick exposure, poison ivy, and other hazards. Wear appropriate protective gear and follow guidelines for safe handling of tools and equipment.

Qualifications:

  • Interest in environmental science, wetlands conservation, ecology, or related fields.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in outdoor settings.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Willingness to learn and adapt to new challenges.
  • Physical stamina to perform outdoor tasks in varying conditions.
