This position provides ongoing scheduled and unscheduled/emergency and quick response maintenance, repair, and construction and to address the continued operation and production at state agency owned facilities, structures, equipment, and lands statewide. 

The incumbent in this position utilizes a robust knowledge base of various fields of construction to maintain and improve the condition of various areas such as hatchery buildings, water intake, distribution, delivery, drainage, septic systems, incubation and bird predation prevention systems and infrastructure for human safety issues, and structural integrity, fish health and production.

This function is critical for the production, health, and loss prevention of hatchery fish as well as protection of employees and related state-owned and managed facilities and infrastructure.

What to Expect-

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Construction and Maintenance Project Lead will:

Provide Project Leadership:

  • Assists in the preparation, scheduling, and supervision of the work layout for the maintenance and construction at facilities, access sites and wildlife areas.
  • Effectively communicates project scope and expectations to a crew by translating general work requirements into a prioritized plan for individual tasks and assignments.
  • Conducts meetings to discuss daily milestones and safety precautions.
  • Determines materials, PPE, equipment, and labor force needed and ensures its availability.

Commercial Plumbing:

  • Repairs or replaces high- and low-pressure supply lines and drainpipes. Installs and modifies existing water intake, distribution and drainage systems and pipes.
  • Operates excavation equipment and electronic utility locators to aid in the location of underground water lines and septic systems.

Heavy Construction Equipment Operation and Maintenance:

  • Inspects, operates, and transports all types of heavy earthmoving equipment including but not limited to: Commercial combination dump trucks and trailers, wheel loaders, dozers, track excavators, power wheelbarrows, boom trucks, backhoes, all-terrain forklifts, and personnel lifts in the execution of all phases of construction as relates to hatchery maintenance installation and repair tasks.
  • Clears, removes, and transports mud and debris from on-site hatchery abatement ponds, intake structures, demolition projects and general construction tasks using excavators, boom trucks, backhoes, and dump trucks.
  • Works around, exposes and installs sensitive buried utilities and alarm lines using backhoes and track excavators.

Mechanical/Metal Fabrication and Carpentry:

  • Independently services and provides diagnostic functions on crowders, rotating belt screens, electronic rolling doors, winches, and predation structures.
  • Layout, cuts, assembles, and welds various hatchery components to modify, repair and improve safety, operation or improve fish production and health.
  • Independently constructs and performs minor and major repairs to buildings, sheds, handrails, and various other structures from specification, plans, sketches, or instructions.
  • Forms, pours, and finishes concrete.

Working Conditions: 

Work Setting, including hazards: Duties are performed at construction sites on hatchery and wildlife areas.  Hazards include working on rough terrain, riverbanks, slippery slopes, and other surfaces, confined and difficult to reach spaces, and working and driving in all types of weather conditions.  Bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, pushing, pulling, and lifting of 50 pounds repetitively when loading and unloading trucks or moving materials around project site.   Must be able to negotiate water in emergency situations.

Schedule: Work 6:00 am-4:30 pm, Monday-Thursday.

Work overtime as needed/requested. This will include overnight stays and evening and weekend work.

Travel Requirements: Travel required 60-80% depending on season.

Tools and Equipment: Computers, basic hand tools, power tools such as drills, cut off saws, circular saws, hydraulic punch, metal band saws, grinders, welders, cutting torch, plasma cutter, personnel lifts, power wheelbarrows, chainsaws, jack hammers and/or powered motors, trash pumps, portable generators, automotive equipment, pick-up trucks and trailers.

Customer Interactions: Frequent interactions varying between Federal, Local, Inter-Agency, and Intra-Agency customers and vendors.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications

  • Four (4) years proficient experience in the operation of heavy equipment Including one (1) or more of the following:
    • Two (2) years of vocational training in heavy equipment, commercial plumbing, general construction, carpentry, concrete, or a similarly related field.
    • Two (2) years of experience in the construction or building trades Two (2) years as a Maintenance Mechanic 1 or a higher level.
    • Two (2) years of similarly related experience.
  • Four (4) years’ experience in industrial/commercial plumbing.
  • Knowledge of common methods, practices and materials used in repairing buildings, mechanical equipment, and building facilities; use and care of tools.
  • Ability to read and work from blueprints, plans, and sketches; estimate materials and time needed to complete jobs.

Licenses: Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) endorsement with current Medical Examiner’s Certificate.

Preferred Qualifications:

In addition to the required qualifications, our ideal applicant will possess some or all the following:

  • Valid First Aid and CPR Certification
  • Forklift Operation Certification
  • Boom Truck Certification
  • Tanker Endorsement
  • HDPE fusion certification (Highly Desired)
