The Henry L. Ferguson Museum is accepting applications for a new Data and Monitoring Project Coordinator position with the Fishers Island Seagrass Management Coalition (FISMC)!
FISMC is a community-based organization that works within the Fishers Island community to promote the importance of seagrass, create sustainable solutions to protect our rare and fragile marine habitat, and develop a deeper understanding of our ecosystem and how our actions affect it.
FISMC collects and monitors data around Fishers Island annually. Some of our projects include anthropogenic monitoring, water quality collections, temperature monitoring, flowering study sites, SeagrassNet sites, and eelgrass mapping. The data collected through these projects helps us direct our education and solution initiatives.
The Data and Monitoring Project Coordinator will oversee and carry out the tasks associated with FISMC's data collection projects and report directly to the FISMC Program Director.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with FISMC leadership to maintain and further develop our research projects, including - 1) Flowering Study and SeagrassNet sites, 2) Eelgrass Mapping, 3) Water Quality Monitoring, 4) Anthropogenic Monitoring. These projects are at varying stages of development and execution. The job will be to engage with the relevant parties to move these projects forward.
- Coordinate and educate Fishers Island High School Students through our summer internship and individual independent study programs. Work closely to support the Fishers Island School science teacher to provide a pathway to learn and participate in our research projects.
- Collaborate with the FISMC Program Director to plan and manage program events and materials related to the data and monitoring projects.
- Report regularly to the FISMC Program Director and FISMC on the progress of existing and planned monitoring projects.
- Maintain high safety standards in all work on land and the water.
Qualifications
- Commitment to FISMC's mission to preserve and protect Fishers Island's incredible marine resources through engaging in community learning, creating sustainable solutions, and discovering all we can about our ecosystem.
- Minimum of three years of relevant and progressive conservation program or research experience.
- A comprehensive knowledge of coastal ecosystems and marine conservation. Specific experience related to Long Island Sound or submerged aquatic vegetation is helpful.
- An attitude for innovation, creativity, and confidence.
- A strong speaker in formal and informal group settings - able to communicate clearly and effectively and adapt to different audiences.
- Excellent field and research skills to identify, develop, and maintain a comprehensive coastal monitoring program.
- Internally motivated and capable of working independently.
- Comfortable working outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.
- A valid driver's license in good standing. A CPR or wilderness first aid certification is helpful.
Education
- Bachelor's Degree required. An advanced degree is preferred. Degrees should be in environmental or marine-related science.
Work Environment
- Most of this work during the monitoring season will occur on Fishers Island. Applicant must be willing to live on Fishers Island or commute regularly via the Fishers Island Ferry. A stipend to reduce the cost of the ferry expenses will be available for applicants who commute.
- Must be willing to use personal vehicle for local, island travel.
- Some monitoring involves physical activity such as paddleboarding and lifting moderately heavy equipment.
Salary
- This position is full-time, for one year with renewal based on available funding and performance
- Up to $55,000 annually, commensurate with experience.
- Hours of Work: regularly, 40 hours per week; may require working during some weekends and evenings.
- Annual Leave: Eight paid holidays and ten vacation days.
