BYLT Development Manager

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Development Manager is responsible for the strategic development and execution of a comprehensive fund development program that secures the resources needed to sustain and grow the entire scope of BYLT’s work in the Bear and Yuba River Watersheds in the Sierra Nevada.
They will strategically lead the planning and implementation of all fundraising activities, including major donor cultivation and solicitation, planned giving activities, direct mail, membership program, and capital campaigns. A successful Development Manager will enthusiastically engage donors, understand motivations for giving, and
offer meaningful opportunities to past, current, and future donors to support BYLT’s work. They will be an experienced leader who fosters a collaborative work environment and work closely with the Communication Manager. They report to the Executive Director.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

Strategic Planning & Department Management (10%)
● Set fundraising strategy and goals and actively manage all fundraising activities to support the annual operations, programs, and long-term financial security needed to advance BYLT’s mission
● Assist with preparation and management of annual budget for the fund development program
● Engage and oversee the Fundraising Committee comprised of Board members and volunteers to assist and implement fundraising strategies
● Report fund development progress to the Fundraising Committee

● As a leader at BYLT, the Development Manager will be part of the management team and engage with other Department leaders to help shape overall strategy and policy and actively solve problems

Fundraising & Donor Engagement (40%)

● Lead 2-3 annual campaigns, including Membership, that build strong, lasting relationships with individual donors; ensure that donors can accomplish their charitable goals while building major gift potential over time
● Co-lead capital campaigns with staff and partners for land protection, infrastructure improvements, land stewardship, interpretive programs, and property endowments
● Research, cultivate, and solicit support from foundations, businesses, and major donors
● Coordinate special Legacy Society donor events, celebrations, and tours
● Oversee the membership development program, including analyzing membership data to define appeal approaches and developing messaging, processes, and schedules for direct mail and digital appeals
● Oversee CRM management and ensure consistent gift tracking and donor acknowledgment
● Help to strengthen and grow BYLT’s planned giving program
● Enter data into the donor database and keep it clean and logically structured.
● Responsible for creating and sending donor acknowledgments, generating reports and analyses, and coordinating BYLT’s fundraising appeals by mail
● Build lists for fundraising and outreach mailings and emails and lead coordination of direct mail campaigns including signing/stuffing/sending mailings and coordinating volunteers
● Support events, including fundraising events, donor tours, or other field events: ordering materials/supplies, printing name tags, securing catering services, or supporting parking, guest relations, and clean up

Campaign or Capacity Grants Management (approx 15%)

● Research and summarize funding opportunities and maintain a pipeline of grant prospects related to specific capital campaigns or general capacity support
● Review and analyze grant expenses to ensure accurate financial tracking based on grant agreements
● Maintain logins on grant portals for various funders and submit grant applications and materials
● Directly lead writing, reviewing, and editing of specific grants as assigned
● Help maintain good relations and communications with funders

Data Management (approx 35%)

● Set standards and procedures for usage of Development software and databases, manage software vendor relationships, and track trends in tools/platforms to consistently improve BYLT’s development operations systems, with support from staff
● Manage the organization’s donor & constituent database (CRM): enter gift data, manage and maintain donor lists and segments, and stay abreast of new features and trends to consistently improve BYLT’s database management
● Help define and implement data entry and reporting standards and procedures
● Query and interpret data from database to deliver reports and insights as requested
● Conduct regular reconciliation of donor database to point of sale systems (PayPal, Stripe, etc) in collaboration with the Finance Manager, and support annual audits
● Support management of other cloud-based platforms and tools used by development department

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION:
Job duties require knowledge and skill equivalent to three to five years of relevant experience in fundraising, preferably at a nonprofit. Consideration will be given to candidates demonstrating comparable qualifications acquired through any combination of relevant education and experience.

● Senior-level fundraising experience with progressive levels of responsibility and leadership
● Experience directly leading a fundraising program at a nonprofit organizations
● Experience building and growing an inclusive, community-based membership program at all levels
● Proven ability to energetically recruit, engage, and retain donors and ensure a positive donor experience; success securing gifts of $10,000 and above preferred
● Experience writing and winning grants from foundations and/or state or federal agencies
● Strong aptitude for managing and using data to drive strategy and experience working with CRMs
● Excellent written communication and public speaking skills
● Committed to conservation and BYLT’s mission, with an ability to translate this into an exciting vision when communicating with donors and staff
● A self-aware leader, with strong interpersonal skills, who values collaboration and open communication, and challenges themselves to learn and grow professionally
● Strong proficiency with Salesforce
● Strong proficiency with MS Office Suite and Google Suite
● Must have own vehicle, valid driver’s license, and be willing to travel on short notice within region, with
2-3 trips outside of region annually

To date, BYLT has protected over 26,000 acres of the region’s natural open space, agricultural lands, forests, public trails, and watercourses and has built or maintained 50+ miles of local trails. BYLT actively works with a wide variety of
local landowners, as well as local, state, and federal agencies and our local tribal leaders, to conserve important lands and build public trail systems which define and inform the region’s core values, economy, and character.
