Founded in 2002, the Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership (TRCP) is a national 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that works with 60+ partner groups, its Corporate Council and its 140,000 members and supporters to guarantee all Americans quality places to hunt and fish. We unite and amplify our partners’ voices by strengthening policy and funding around conservation, habitat, and access.    

TRCP seeks a thoughtful and strategic individual to serve as its Director, Center for Public Lands who will be responsible for developing and implementing campaigns to further the organization’s work to conserve public lands primarily in the Western U.S., specifically through safeguarding big game migration corridors, balancing all forms of development with habitat values, and opening access to inaccessible public lands. This individual will work to strategically grow the TRCP’s presence in the region, identify new campaign opportunities, fundraise, and effectively manage field staff across 8 Western states. Prior experience supervising staff and working on conservation policy is required.  

The ideal candidate is a strategic thinker with experience in conservation advocacy, campaign development and implementation, and fundraising. This person must understand the voice and values of the hunt-fish community and be eager to further the TRCP’s mission to guarantee all Americans quality places to hunt and fish.

Responsibilities 

The Director leads TRCP’s Center for Public Lands team to establish and facilitate accomplishment of key public lands conservation policy outcomes, and to expand the awareness, role and influence of the TRCP throughout the western United States and nationally.    

This position is responsible for:  

  • Development of the TRCP’s policy positions on public lands issues, and national campaign strategies to achieve conservation goals, including big game habitat management and conservation, public land access, and the conservation of special places in the West.  
  • Direct supervision of TRCP’s public lands field staff to successfully achieve public land conservation objectives in states and regionally.  
  • Fundraising to ensure the financial stability and success of the TRCP’s public lands programs and operations. 

Key Duties  

  • Design and implement national campaign strategies to accomplish public lands policy objectives and to advance the TRCP’s mission to guarantee all Americans quality places to hunt and fish, including those focused on Bureau of Land Management and National Forest public lands management.    
  • Directly supervise field staff to establish and achieve national and state-based campaign goals.   
  • Lead TRCP’s direct engagement on specific national public land policy issues.    
  • Maintain and facilitate partner engagement and coordination through the TRCP Public Lands Working Group.  
  • Develop and maintain relationships with leadership from state and national hunting and fishing conservation groups and businesses, federal and state agency leaders and elected decision makers.  
  • Coordinate with partner organizations to effectively implement priority campaigns.   
  • Coordinate closely with the TRCP’s Western Communication Manager to ensure strategic public-facing advocacy through all forms of media/communications.    
  • Lead a strong fundraising program to grow and sustain the Center, and work with the TRCP development team and management team to ensure ongoing financial support for the Center and its activities. 
  • Ensure that grant deliverables are met, and work with field staff and TRCP’s development team on compliant reporting. 
  • Other duties as assigned. 

Essential Experience, Skills, and Competencies 

  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience developing public lands public policy and/or advocacy campaigns, with a preference for experience specifically with hunting and fishing priorities. 
  • A minimum of 3 years’ experience in a leadership role with supervisory experience. 
  • A Bachelor’s degree, at minimum, in biology, natural resource management, political science, public administration, or similar course of study.   
  • Direct experience with the legislative process and administrative rulemaking process at the federal level. 
  • Demonstrated ability to build & maintain strong working relationships with a diverse group of stakeholders, and a strong knowledge of public land management agencies.   
  • Demonstrated fundraising ability.  
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills. 
  • Passion for and an understanding of public lands, particularly in the Western U.S., as well as the social and economic values and contributions the region. 
  • Ability to navigate the varied and diverse interests that influence public lands conservation.  
  • Willingness and ability to frequently travel across the Western U.S. and nationally. 
  • Strong organizational skills and careful attention to detail. 
  • Ability to work virtually and independently.  
  • Strong initiative, enthusiasm, and willingness to pitch in whenever needed.
