In pursuit of its mission to restore, enhance and protect the tree canopy of the nation’s capital, Casey Trees (CT) delivers a broad base of programs and services to the DC Metro area. The organization plants more than 6,500 trees each year grown at our own nursery; cares and maintains those trees; conserves greenspace; conducts school and community-based youth STEM programming; and advocates for stronger policies and laws to preserve trees across the area. Casey Trees emphasizes innovative solutions and working with diverse partners to advance and promote tree canopy solutions that meet the needs of the communities that we serve.      

Summary 

The Director of Development (“Director”) is a member of the Casey Trees leadership team, and is responsible for the planning, oversight and implementation of a comprehensive program to secure donations from individuals, foundations, corporations, government and other sources in support CT’s budget and programmatic goals. The incumbent interfaces regularly in person, via telephone and through correspondence with existing and potential donors, staff, organizations and other donor prospects. 

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the Director represents the newly created Development Department in program, board and related organizational meetings and events. This is a new position at CT, projected to oversee a team of up to five development and membership professionals, with the goal of taking CT’s existing fundraising efforts to a new level.

Compensation

Salary range: $145-155K.  Casey Trees offers excellent benefits including health, dental, vision, flexible spending account, paid holidays, paid time off, and retirement plan 403 (b). This position is eligible for the 457 plan (deferred compensation plan). 

Essential Functions 

  • Provide vision, leadership, and oversight to CT’s Development Department to ensure the fundraising goals and targets of the Development Department are met or exceeded.
  • Develop and institute best practices, protocols, and procedures to ensure operational integrity and transparency, donor tracking, updates, reports, and a high level of donor satisfaction/repeat contributions.
  • Develop and implement annual and long-range development plans and budgets in coordination with the senior leadership team; lead and coordinate staff and board efforts to ensure that annual and long-term operating and program budgets are met or exceeded.
  • Identify, cultivate, and secure funds from new and existing donors. 
  • Manage a portfolio of existing and potential donors to ensure a steady stream of 3rd party funds for CT’s programmatic work CT’s fundraising activities.
  • Craft and manage high-quality fundraising proposals and budgets; mentor staff to do the same.
  • Develop, formulate, and institute new fundraising streams and campaigns.
  • Work across departments and specifically with the Communications Department to ensure consistent, effective messaging and products that reflect and enhance the CT brand.
  • Keeps abreast of trends in corporate social responsibility, philanthropy, volunteerism, equity, and place-based giving
  • Connects people to trees
  • Other duties as assigned

Supervisory Responsibilities 

The incumbent has two direct reports, with a future potential for a team of five total staff. 

Working Conditions

The incumbent works primarily in an office. Must be able to use equipment such as:  Computers/Printer/Copier/Telephone/Smartphones/Tablets, etc. (not an exclusive list 

Physical Demands:  

  • All CT employees may engage in volunteer tree planting and related activities and events in outdoor environments. The incumbent may at times work outside, in the heat, cold and inclement weather and must have suitable clothing.   • While performing the duties of this job, the incumbent is regularly required to talk, hear, stand; walk; use hands to handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. The incumbent is occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, lift files, open filing cabinets, bend or stand on a stool, etc.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time, exempt position, averaging 40 hours a week. The incumbent must be able and willing to work evenings, weekends, and extended hours when needed. 

Travel

Travel is primarily local to the greater Washington, DC region including daily and overnight travel to Casey Tree Farm in Berryville, VA. Some out of the area travel and overnights may be expected.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field; or equivalent combination of experience and education
  • Eight or more years of professional experience in fundraising and development within a nonprofit environment
  • Minimum of three to five years of management experience and a track record of success in supervising, mentoring, and empowering a successful team.
  • Experience working as a spokesperson for a brand or mission
  • Experience cultivating and expanding donor relationships over time including soliciting major gifts, engaging corporate partners and foundations.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to influence and engage a wide range of donors and build long-term relationships
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills a must
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to prioritize
  • Ability to juggle multiple responsibilities and meet deadlines
  • Understanding of fundraising, membership, volunteer, and advocacy needs 
  • Passion and excitement for the work and mission of Casey Trees

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with a CRM database, preferably Salesforce and Pardot, and other digital platforms such as Classy, WordPress, Adobe Creative Suite, and Microsoft Suite.
