One of TNC’s primary goals is to cultivate an inclusive work environment so that employees around the globe have a sense of belonging and feel that their unique contributions are valued. We know we’ll only achieve our mission by hiring and engaging a diverse staff that reflects the communities in which we work. Recognizing that people bring talent and skills that have been developed outside the scope of a job, we take a holistic approach to recruitment that considers life experience in addition to the professional requirements listed in our postings. Please apply – we’d love to hear from you. To quote a popular saying at TNC, “you’ll join for the mission, and you’ll stay for the people.”

WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE TOGETHER
The California Chapter is TNC’s largest state program and one of the largest, most dynamic conservation organizations in the country. With approximately 275 employees, from financial analysts and fundraisers to ecologists and economists, we are currently invested in 14 strategies to address the biggest challenges facing California and the world, including numerous community-based projects designed to increase the pace, scale, and effectiveness of conservation. Over the past six decades, we have protected 1.4 million acres, 5,000 miles of streams, and 3.8 million acres of ocean habitat in California and off the coast.

The California Chapter believes that we are most effective when we are embedded in our state’s communities, politics, media, and environmental issues. For this reason, and to reduce our carbon footprint when meeting in person, all staff live in California, including those in a home office.

The Director of Individual Giving, Northern California, leads the Northern California Individual Giving team to plan, implement, and coordinate effective multi-year strategies and plans for individual donors and prospects in support of the California chapter’s fundraising goals.

As a member of the Development Senior Management Team, the Director of Individual Giving, Northern California, engages with chapter staff to inform and execute the strategic direction of the department, set and achieve robust fundraising goals in support of an organization-wide campaign, and ensure effective engagement with volunteer leadership and high net worth individuals.

In addition to team leadership and supervisory duties, the Director of Individual Giving, Northern California is responsible for managing and building strong relationships with a portfolio of 60-75 qualified prospects with the capacity to give $500,000 or more, toward an annual goal of $5,000,000 and additional bequest notifications. They have a track record of raising seven-figure gifts and understand and apply complex principles of developing donor strategies. They will be responsible for direct asks in support of both global and local priorities to meet funding needs. They can discuss assets and listen for opportunities for gifts of assets or other non-cash gifts, such as planned gifts and trade lands. The Director of Individual Giving, Northern California provides opportunities for donors to receive recognition and increase future giving. They involve and engage appropriate partners in the field, keeping them apprised of interactions, issues and/or concerns, and address questions as needed. They can feature the programs of the Conservancy in detailed terms and can confidently discuss legacy giving opportunities. They understand project budgets and may build proposal budgets utilizing this knowledge. They will develop a referral network as needed and may manage formal and/or informal networks of volunteers. They will be required to use the Conservancy’s donor database and may develop proposals. They will travel frequently and on short notice, work long and flexible hours as needed.
