Job Description:
As a District Resource Management Assistant, you will assist the District Resource Specialist with implementation of resource management projects across State Park District 3, which includes Douthat, Falling Spring, Green Pastures, James River, Natural Bridge, Seven Bends, Shenandoah River, and Sky Meadows State Parks. The position is based at Natural Bridge State Park in Rockbridge County, Virginia.
Primary duties will be to assist District Resource Specialist and supervise seasonal staff in performing resource management activities including invasive species treatment, prescribed burns, boundary marking, vegetation surveys, permanent monitoring plot establishment, and long term land management planning and implementation. Position will also provide state park/system-wide support in data management using ESRI Arc Pro.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Knowledge of regional tree/non-woody plant species and ecosystems, and tree species identification strongly recommended.
- Ability to organize and maintain tools and equipment associated with resource activities such as GPS units, backpack sprayers, trail building tools, etc. is an advantage.
- Good writing and communication skills, capable of working independently.
Additional Considerations:
- Knowledge and experience using GIS/GPS equipment and mapping software, specifically ESRI Arc Pro preferred.
- VA Pesticide Applicator’s License or Registered Technician Certification License preferred. License will need to be obtained if not currently licensed.
- NWCG fire fighter crew level certification preferred. Certification will need to be obtained within 12 months.
Special Instructions:
- Wage positions are not eligible for benefits and are limited to 1,500 hours worked in 12 months from May 1 to April 30, regardless of start date.
- Valid VA Driver’s License or ability to attain required.
- Ability to work in diverse conditions including exposure to the outdoors, weather in all seasons, dust, animals and insects
- Virginia registered technician certification (pesticide) or the ability to obtain within 6 months
- DCR Sawyer Apprentice qualification or the ability to obtain within 6 months
- Frequent daily and occasional overnight travel required
Selected candidate(s) will need to complete the I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification Form. DCR participates in E-Verify.
Employment in all positions within the Virginia State Parks is contingent upon satisfactory completion of a background check including a criminal history record check.
Weekends and holiday work required. We provide on the job training. Employees may be required to perform other park related duties during emergencies, or on a non-recurrent basis. Seasonal summer jobs can be an outstanding first step toward a lasting career with the park service.
