Ecological Modeler - 6 Month Contract

The Computational Ecology Group (CEG) Inc. is seeking an experienced researcher or postdoc to support several wildlife and landscape research projects for a six-month term. The successful candidate will join a team of research professionals, and contribute to collaborative projects data gathering and analysis, as well as statistical, spatial, and simulation modeling. CEG (www.ceg.group) is a non-profit organization that specializes in the development of ecological forecasting models, and uses a range of quantitative approaches to support partners in making management decisions and actions.
CEG Inc. is recruiting an Ecological modeler to contribute to projects that model the impact of different environmental conditions and recovery actions for at-risk wildlife populations. This term position will support several quantitative modeling projects, supporting the team in meeting key deadlines.
The successful candidate will have prior experience with spatial and statistical analyses, coding, modeling, and scientific writing. Potential tasks include:
- Movement and habitat selection analyses, step-selection function analysis
- Creating/using large datasets, spatial data layers
- Analyzing data using R, python
- Frequentist statistics: univariate, multivariate GLMs
- Creating maps, visuals in R, ArcGIS
- Running simulation models (individual-based), analyzing results
- Literature reviews and syntheses
- Writing meta-data, reports, manuscripts
- Supporting other team members with other analytical and communication tasks
We are looking for someone who can work collaboratively with CEG team members, government, industry, and other partners to develop and interpret study results. Ideal candidates will have a relevant publication record, possess excellent written and oral communication skills, demonstrate initiative, and work well both independently and within teams.
Desired experience, aptitudes:
- PhD in wildlife or landscape ecology, or MSc with extensive quantitative modeling experience
- Interest in collaborative work via a remote work environment
- Problem-solving abilities, and a willingness to learn new skills and tasks
- Attention to detail, and the ability to develop and keep pace with project timelines
Compensation: CEG welcomes applicants who want to work part- or full-time for this six-month period. This position is virtual and open to scientists residing in North America. No office space is provided but minimal travel support may be available. Compensation will be commensurate to experience but approximately ~$5,700 - $6,000/mo. CAD (for full-time), on a contract-basis for up to 6 months for postdoc-level applicants. Preference will be given to Canadian citizens living in western North America, near Canmore AB. Preferred start date: Feb.15, 2025.
