POSITION SUMMARY:
The Sisters of St. Joseph are looking for a Land Ecology Intern who will work collaboratively with the Director of Ecological Sustainability. Monday - Thursday 9am - 3pm (24 hours per week). The program will run from June through August (12 weeks). Start date is flexible. The 212-acre Sisters of St. Joseph Brentwood property is a tranquil campus, consisting of woodlands, meadows, native gardens and 28 acres of organic farmland. Our 45-acre pine-oak woodland hosts a diversity of plants and wildlife. The Ecological Sustainability Department has worked on several environmental initiatives including replacing lawns with native meadows, leasing land to local organic farmers, building a 3,192-panel solar array, managing stormwater with rain gardens, porous asphalt and permeable pavers and installing innovative/alternative waste treatment systems to replace the groundwater polluting systems which are common in the area. INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
Interns will work alongside our 4-person team of Landscape Ecologists, dedicating much of their time to habitat management and restoration. Job responsibilities will include:

  • Weeding native gardens & watering new plantings
  • Conducting and analyzing botanical and wildlife surveys
  • Surveying invasive species and managing their populations
  • Adaptive landscape management
  •  Participating in educational outreach on and off campus

QUALIFICATIONS:

  •  Horticulture/gardening
  •  Local flora and fauna identification
  • Invasive plant removal
  • Field research
  • Education or experience with invasive species, ecology, horticulture, natural science, conservation,a related field, or a willingness to learn

OPPORTUNITIES:
Interns can expect to grow their skills in plant identification, surveying, habitat restoration, and adaptive landscape management. Interns will also receive hands-on landscape experience for controlling and monitoring invasive species. The program will include learning in depth about the sustainability projects on campus and participating in conversations regarding ecological ethics, as well as occasional educational field trips to relevant local landscapes.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear, use hands and fingers to handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls, and reach with hands and arms. Exerting up to 25 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, bend, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and ability to adjust focus.
