Position Description:
The salt marshes at Fire Island National Seashore have been degraded by historical anthropogenic activities (e.g., ditching) and face additional risks from various human-induced threats, including the impacts of climate change. To proactively conserve these ecosystems and address climate change challenges, the National Park Service (NPS) is implementing several resilience strategies. These include restoring degraded marshes at Fire Island National Seashore and other locations, as well as assessing potential marsh migration.
Responsibilities:
- Participate in surveys and monitoring of coastal marshes, including mapping, vegetation surveys, hydrology assessments, wildlife surveys, and photo plots.
- Document results in databases, including mapping sites and maintaining other spatial databases in AGOL.
- Develop communications and outreach materials associated with the project.
- Assist with ongoing park monitoring of shorebirds, small mammals, and forest vegetation.
Qualifications:
- Major studies relevant to this position: Natural Resources, Ornithology, or Wildlife Biology.
- Ability to work independently and self-direct tasks, as well as collaborate effectively as part of a team.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Basic knowledge of coastal marshes, databases, compasses, GPS, and GIS.
- Effective communication skills.
- Ability to collect and manage data, adhere to scientific methods, and report field study results.
- Physically fit, able to spend most of the day walking on uneven terrain, and capable of working in environments with extreme temperatures and challenging conditions.
- Comfortable driving a four-wheel-drive vehicle.
- Adhere to safety protocols to ensure safe navigation throughout the day. Interns are expected to use good judgment to remain safe and work efficiently.

Public Land Corps Non-Competitive Hiring Authority (PLC)
The Public Land Corps Non-Competitive Hiring Authority is a special hiring authority available to qualifying interns. The intern must be between the ages of 18 and 30 years old, inclusive, or a veteran up to age 35 and complete 640 hours of work on an appropriate conservation project to be eligible for this hiring authority. Upon successful completion of the PLC project(s), the intern is eligible for two years to be hired non-competitively into a federal seasonal, term, or permanent position.
