General Description:
The Education and Outreach Director (EOD) is an employee of the Gallatin Conservation District (GCD). GCD is a subdivision of state government and receives revenues from real property taxes. The EOD reports to the Board of Supervisors and District Administrator and will work in tandem with District employees. The Education and Outreach Director develops and delivers conservation programs, manages educational outreach efforts, maintains demonstration gardens, participates in local events, manages social media and newsletters, and provides administrative support to promote conservation initiatives and engage with the public.
The position of Education and Outreach Director requires a degree in natural resources, education, or a related field. While not mandatory, a background in environmental science, agriculture, range management, soil science, water resources, forestry, or other natural resource disciplines is highly beneficial. A working knowledge of a wide range of natural resource topics is also advantageous.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Develops conservation education programs, landowner workshops, demonstrations, and tours of innovative conservation-minded projects in collaboration with the Natural Resource Specialist.
- Performs outreach and educational activities to teach a diverse audience about conservation practices.
- Maintains the demonstration gardens, raised beds, and other areas of the Education and Outreach Center in collaboration with the Education Specialist.
- Creates and distributes educational materials (brochures, online resources, flyers) to inform the public about conservation programs and initiatives.
- Works with GCD staff to manage the Manhattan Farmers Market (Wednesdays from 4-7 pm) and participates in other local community events to promote district programs and engage with the public.
- Manages and updates social media platforms and monthly e-newsletters.
- Uses a variety of outreach techniques (public speaking, social media campaigns, community workshops) to advertise programs and resources.
- Serves as a liaison with other organizations on natural resource education and programs. Attends and participates in conferences, seminars, and training sessions throughout the state to stay informed on the latest trends in conservation education.
- Assists the Administrator as needed and provides support in various tasks, including filling in during absences.
- Attends regularly scheduled board meetings, collaborating with the Board of Supervisors and coworkers.
Preferred Experience:
- Associate’s degree or higher with focus in a natural resource field. Working experience in a natural resource field with a conservation district and/or state or federal land management agency preferred. Familiarity with production agriculture/ranching a plus.
- At least 1 year of professional experience in a natural resource or education-related field.
- Knowledge and experience with natural resources/conservation education.
- Excellent written, verbal communication, and presentation skills.
- Ability to foster effective partnerships.
- Ability to work independently, be organized, prioritize tasks, and be self-motivated, but carry the ability to also work as a team.
- Proficient in common computer skills, including programs such as Google Drive.
