The main role of the Environmental Educator is to lead programming at the West Virginia Botanic Garden. Programming includes but is not limited to school groups, summer camps, private group tours, and public programs. The environmental educator is also responsible for program development and coordination as needed. Additional programming/ special projects may be developed and implemented if funding (including salary) is secured to do so. Time Commitment:

The Environmental Educator Position is year-round, part-time with the majority of the work taking place in the spring and summer. Hours may include Saturdays and Sundays when education programs are running, plus additional flextime during the week. Weekday mornings are required during Spring and Fall School Program seasons.

Responsibilities:

Working closely with the education director this position will complete a variety of tasks related to the coordination, development, and implementation of educational  programming that include:

  • Working with diverse audiences of all ages and backgrounds, most notably children.
  • Developing high-quality programs and lesson plans that are both educational and engaging and meet the needs and interests of the target audience.
  • Independently leading a variety of programs including group tours, school groups, presentations, public programs, and workshops.
  • Working within given budgets and submitting material requests and costs to the Education Director ahead of planned programs as needed.
  • As camper leader, working with and supervising seasonal camp instructors.
  • Working as a member of the WVBG team, which may mean helping staff or volunteers with additional tasks as needed.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will be responsible, detail-oriented, proactive, and have the ability to represent the WVBG in a friendly and enthusiastic manner, and to work as a team with other staff.

  • Experience in working with children
  • Ability to manage risk in outdoor settings
  • Experience in designing programs preferred
  • Experience teaching in outdoor settings preferred
  • Leadership experience preferred
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and maintain calm under pressure
  • Flexibility, ability to problem solve, and sense of humor a must
  • Ability to create a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment for participants
