Position Summary:
CEMML is a research, education, and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at Colorado State University (CSU). CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense (DoD) and other public lands. We provide technical support, conduct applied research, and offer career development and learning opportunities to support resource stewardship. Multiple Environmental Geographic Information System (GIS) Specialist (Professional Individual Contributor I) positions are available at the Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands (CEMML), duty stationed in Fort Collins, CO, as part of the US Air Force Environmental GIS project (AFEnvGIS) to assist with multiple technical and support functions including: (1) reach back support (RBS) for off-campus GIS Analysts, (2) technical support as required by the Air Force Civil Engineering Center (AFCEC), (3) data development, (4) assistance and support for data maintenance, and (5) Quality Control (QC) and oversight to ensure Data Integrity (DI) for over 100 USAF installations. In some instances, positions may require staff to be fully in-person. In other instances, hybrid or remote arrangements may be possible.

The GIS Specialist(s) will typically communicate with colleagues and collaborators typically familiar with the GIS occupational discipline. The employee(s) will, through guidance and supervision acquire knowledge of University policies and systems relevant and necessary to complete work requirements. Work impact is limited to the immediate work team.

Travel to selected Air Force installations may be required for data collection and development.

Required Qualifications:    

  • BA/BS degree in a relevant discipline such as: Geospatial Information Systems (GIS), natural resource management, environmental science, geography, cultural resource management, anthropology, computer science, or other related field.
  • One year, or a combined total of twelve months, of applicable work experience in GIS, GPS (or otherwise spatially integrated) data collection, data management, data development, and/or data analysis/interpretation. Course work will not be included.
  • Training and/or experience with multiple facets of GIS such as GIS software (ESRI/ArcGIS), geodatabases, online/interactive geospatial management and viewing tools etc.
  • Experience working with geospatial data collection and/or data management in an official capacity with highly structured organizations such as local/state/federal agencies, established non-profit organizations, or private business.
  • Experience developing professional products including professional products such as formal databases, presentations, reports, official maps, etc.
  • Superior written communication skills are required.
  • Primary duty station: Fort Collins, CO – Position is hybrid eligible but not for full time remote or long-distance work.
  • Willingness to periodically travel to USAF Installations as necessary for data collection and development.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license by the employment start date.
  • The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. by proposed start date; CEMML will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.
