Job Description:
Maryland Environmental Service (MES) has an opening in the Environmental Dredging and Restoration Group for a full time Environmental Specialist (ES) or Senior Environmental Specialist (SES) at the Paul S. Sarbanes Ecosystem Restoration Project at Poplar Island, an environmental restoration project, located in the Chesapeake Bay in Talbot County, Maryland. Classification offered is commensurate with experience. The selected candidate will be responsible for developing and delivering educational and outreach programs, including classroom and community group presentations, and providing site tours to students, the public, government officials and resource and technical agencies. This position may also perform basic field studies, which could include the collection of field samples, as well as assist with technical reports, preparing meeting summaries, or other environmental project-related tasks. Occasional evening and weekend work will be necessary. This position will require maintaining a safe boater’s license with regular boat operations to and from the site. Training is available.

Minimum Requirements:
For education and outreach positions, a bachelor’s degree in education, environmental science, or related field from an accredited college or university is required. Must have a valid driver’s license with less than five points, the ability to lift 50lbs, and the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, plus:
- Environmental Specialist: In addition to the education experience listed above, a minimum of one year of experience in environmental education.
- Senior Environmental Specialist: In addition to the education experience listed above, a minimum of three years of experience in environmental education. One year of experience must have included responsibility managing outreach projects and providing leadership to other professional staff.
- An applicable advanced education degree may be substituted for up to two years of experience.
Preferred qualifications include a background with strong focus in K-12 education, fluency in MS Office Suite, and experience in presenting information to groups of people which may include school aged children. A candidate who is bilingual in Spanish is also preferred. Boat operations experience is preferred but not required, this position will require training in the operations of a large crew vessel.
