The Mountain School of Milton Academy seeks an Environmental Studies Teacher for the 2025-26 academic year.

The Mountain School is a semester-long, residential academic program for high school juniors set on four hundred acres in central Vermont. Each fall and spring semester, 45 students from across the country join our campus where they take academic classes, participate in our farm and outdoor programs, and build a diverse and interdependent community of scholars. 

Position responsibilities include:

  • Teaching two sections of environmental studies.
  • Possibility of teaching a third course in math, science, food systems, or another elective
  • Leading a co-curricular “Science Hike” ecology project
  • Working with students on the farm and in the woods
  • Advising students
  • Participating fully in the life of the school, which requires supervision of evening and weekend activities, attendance at meals, and support of school programs

The successful candidate will:

  • Have at minimum a BA
  • Have at least three years’ experience teaching high school students
  • Be ready to live and work in rural Vermont 
  • Possess an understanding of the need to focus on inclusion, equity, and belonging when working in a school environment. Experience working with BIPOC and LGBTQ+ students.

Salary is based on experience, starting at $44,000, and full-time positions include medical and dental insurance as well as a retirement plan. On campus housing with residential life responsibilities is possible, but not guaranteed. Other benefits include meals on campus from our “farm to table” kitchen, easy access to outdoor spaces and trails, and opportunities to pursue professional development.
