Project: ESPACYPA – Martinique: Monitoring sedentary and erratic avian species of hunting and heritage interest in the Lesser Antilles

Location: Office and fieldwork in Martinique

Supervisory Reporting: Primary authority under the scientific coordinator of Caribaea Initiative and secondary authority under the project officer

Start Date: Between January 2, 2025, and February 1, 2025

Application Deadline: January 31, 2025

Contract Type and Duration: Fixed-term contract (35 hours/week), 3 months renewable, subject to project funding extension and outstanding professional performance

Remuneration: €2,040–€2,200 gross monthly, depending on qualifications and experience

Caribaea Initiative

Caribaea Initiative is a non-governmental organization established in 2014, headquartered in Guadeloupe, and recognized as a public-interest association under French law (1901). Its mission is to strengthen the scientific expertise of the island states and territories of the Caribbean in the fields of ecology and conservation biology. The organization operates across four key areas:

  • Developing and funding scientific projects on the study and conservation of biodiversity in the insular Caribbean.
  • Strengthening local expertise by involving Caribbean students and early-career researchers in its projects and equipping them with the resources, knowledge, and technical tools to pursue scientific careers in conservation biology.
  • Establishing a network of competent actors in ecology and conservation biology in the Caribbean region.
  • Raising awareness among Caribbean youth about natural sciences and biodiversity through educational tools designed to inspire future vocations.

Job description

This position is part of several research projects conducted by the NGO, aimed at acquiring knowledge about various animal species in the French Antilles. The field technician’s responsibilities will include:

  • Deploying camera traps and acoustic recorders.
  • Surveying study sites.
  • Setting up trapping systems.
  • Handling and restraining wildlife, particularly birds and reptiles.
  • Collecting biological samples.

Required Profile

Minimum Education Level:

  • BTSA in Nature Management and Conservation (equivalent to 2 years of post-secondary education)
  • Professional Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Management and Protection (3 years post-secondary)
  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology (3 years post-secondary)

Skills and Qualifications

Knowledge and Basic Competencies:

  • Naturalist knowledge and interest in Martinican and Caribbean fauna
  • Interest in and appreciation for scientific research
  • Curiosity about new technologies

Operational Skills:

  • Proficiency in Creole is highly appreciated
  • Proficiency in French is required
  • English proficiency is desirable
  • Competence in database management and completion (Excel)
  • Basic IT skills (data transfer, office software, etc.)

Professional Attributes:

  • Strong listening and synthesis abilities
  • Proficiency with electronic devices and IT tools
  • Ability to follow scientific protocols
  • Strong interpersonal skills for teamwork
  • Adaptability, autonomy, and organizational skills

Working Conditions / Specific Requirements

  • Autonomy: The technician may work alone in the field to collect data.
  • Valid driver’s license is mandatory.
  • Good physical condition: Fieldwork can be physically demanding, requiring the transport of camera traps and acoustic recorders.
