The Fish and Feathers program provides our national park partners with talented interns who are eager to learn and to engage with local communities. The intern will focus on supporting, implementing, and leading community outreach programs that focus on fishing and birding activities. The overall goal is to increase diverse community engagement with NPS partners during the program and in years to come. Missouri National Recreational River encompasses 98 miles of the Missouri River along the South Dakota and Nebraska borders. The park is divided into two districts: the 39-Mile District and the 59-Mile District. Yankton is a thriving community with a population of around 15,000 people. South Dakota summers can be windy, with thunderstorms and the potential for tornadoes. A required training during the first week is expected in Estes Park, Colorado. 

Qualifications:

  • Ability to hike and conduct field operations as part of a team and/or independently in an outdoor setting.
  • Experience giving presentations.
  • Interest in learning fishing regulations and bird identification for program development and implementation.
  • Strong interpersonal, oral, listening, and written communication skills.
  • Interest in learning new skills, such as rafting, canoeing and kayaking.

Time frame:

May 11, 2025 – August 1, 2025 (12 weeks)

You must (additional requirements):

  • Must be a legal resident or U.S citizen.
  • Must be age 18 - 30, or up to 35 if a veteran.
  • A personal vehicle is recommended for this position.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license to drive a government vehicle.
  • Selected applicant will undergo a background check
