Fish and Wildlife Technician 2

Alaska Department of Fish and Game

Soldotna, Alaska

Job Type Temporary
Salary $19.05 per hour
Deadline Mar 21, 2025
Experience 0 - 1 years

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Commercial Fisheries Division, is seeking four permanent-seasonal Fish and Wildlife Technician (FWT) 2s. The duty station for these positions is in Soldotna, AK but will primarily work out of remote field camps at Judd, Chelatna, or Larson Lake weir camps. These positions will be responsible for assisting with the installation, operation and maintenance of either a floating or fixed picket weir and camp mobilization and demobilization. Under the general supervision of a Fishery Biologist 2 and a Fishery Biologist 1, the technicians will be part of a two-person crew to identify and enumerate all five species of Pacific Salmon. A subsample of sockeye salmon will be collected for age, sex and length (ASL) and daily quality assurance and quality control (QAQC) will be completed. The Department uses this data to monitor if adequate numbers of sockeye salmon are returning to the major Upper Cook Inlet sockeye salmon systems. Technicians will spend a week in Soldotna where they will receive training, such as wildlife safety and small boat operations, and prepare gear before flying out to their respective remote weir camps via float planes. Technicians may use boats with outboard motors to accomplish assigned tasks while in the field. These positions offer exposure to living and working on remote Alaskan lakes. This is an opportunity to gain hands-on experience sampling salmonids, data collection, weir operation, and boat driving. Crew members will get the unique experience of observing thousands of salmon migrating to their spawning grounds in the Alaskan backcountry. They’ll also gain professional experience contributing real-time data to in-season fishery management. Other perks include outstanding fishing and wildlife sightings.
