Fisheries Intern/Technician I

1 or 2 positions starting in late May lasting 3 to 7 months for the 2025 field season.

Primary duties include assisting regional fisheries biologists with:

  • Native cutthroat trout enhancement projects throughout Northeast Utah: fish trap/fish spawning operations, stream habitat improvement projects, rotenone treatments, invasive species removals (brook trout), fisheries population and assessment surveys
  • Completing required training: purchasing, drivers, computer and information technology, pesticide applicators licensing, and helicopter and airplane safety trainings among others will be administered
  • High mountain lake fish surveys
  • Wilderness horse pack camping trips
  • Reservoir sampling including gill netting, fyke netting, boat electrofishing, fish tagging, foodweb/ecology studies
  • Habitat protection and enhancement activities, trespass cattle monitoring, riparian enclosure/exclosure fencing
  • Help with conservation outreach activities (e.g., fishing clinics/free fishing day)
  • Assist biologists with crew training and supervision. Crew leads will be expected to keep subordinate employees productive and on task in an independent capacity. Crew will be assigned equipment upkeep and maintenance duties while not in field duty status.
  • Other duties may be assigned on occasion

Much of this work is completed in remote areas requiring frequent overnight camping in some of the most scenic areas of Utah (often no cell service). Campers, food, and supplies are provided on overnight trips. Housing and benefits are not provided for this position. However, a work camper trailer may be utilized during housing search. Work related gear (waders, wader boots, uniform t-shirts and hat) is provided.

Qualifications: Progress toward a fisheries management or related college degree is required. This position is geared toward undergrads or recent graduates seeking additional experience in the fisheries management field.

Experience with: electrofishing and netting surveys, working, camping, and hiking in remote environments, habitat and/or landscaping, fish handling, maintaining fisheries sampling gears, working/leading in team environments, horse riding, and identification of trout species will be used as ranking criteria. Hard work ethic, critical thinking skills, ability to work independently, and attention to detail is a must. Candidates are expected to be able to pack 50 pounds through mountainous terrain for 8+ miles in a day, often in slippery, rocky terrain.
