The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has an exciting opportunity within our Olympic Region as a Region Check Cruiser, Forest Check Cruiser 1. The mission of DNR is to manage, sustain, and protect the health and productivity of Washington's lands and waters to meet the needs of present and future generations. This position supports the mission and goals of the Department through the timber sales program. The responsibilities of the Olympic Region’s Forest Check Cruiser include performing as the lead forest cruiser for the region’s timber sales program. This work includes obtaining accurate net volumes for proposed timber sales, rights of ways, and lease sites by designing accurate sampling techniques, cruise intensities, and following the guidance in DNR’s Timber Cruising Handbook. This position also performs check cruising of other department cruisers and contract cruisers, and provides log manufacturing compliance on Region timber scale sales, along with the Region’s contract harvesting program
Responsibilities:
- Independently cruise Olympic Region Timber Sales.
- Determine the best sampling technique and cruise intensity for each timber sale.
- Ensure cruising data is accurate and meets the standards of the DNR Timber Cruising Handbook.
- Receive, Review, and coordinate cruising assignments within the Olympic Region.
- Check the cruise of other forest cruisers and district personnel.
- Review, field site visit, and perform log scaling of active Region scale sales and sort sales.
Required Qualifications:
- Three years of professional forestry and/or timber cruising experience.
OR an equivalent combination of education and/or experience. - Knowledge of cruising and mensuration skills.
- Use of specialized cruising equipment and software.
