The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has an exciting opportunity in the Forest Resources Division in Forest Informatics. DNR manages working forests on 2.1 million acres of state trust lands to provide quality habitat, clean water, and other public resources, as well as a stream of sustainable revenue to support public school construction and other trust beneficiaries. The maintenance of the balance between sustainable production of natural resource revenue, protection of public resources, and healthy natural habitats is a priority of the Division.
The talented and creative individuals within the Forest Informatics section support the sustainable management of DNR's State Uplands programs by developing and delivering innovative technology and equipment, data, and analyses.
We are looking for a candidate to fill the Forest Inventory Data Analyst role, working within our Forest Inventory team. This position provides technical and analytical support for DNR’s Forest Inventory Program by providing entry-level competency in the following information technology fields: data stewardship, database management, database programming, GIS data architecture, and GIS software development. These forest inventory data are critical to supporting agency programs in the sustainable long-term management of state trust lands.
This is a short-term position, with an anticipated start date of 2/16/2025 and an end date of 6/30/2025.Duties
Responsibilities:
Managing and stewarding tabular and spatial data sets residing in enterprise-level databases:
- Primary data steward for DNR Forest Inventory GIS data sets (vector or polygon inventory units)
- Performs spatial and tabular edits to ensure the data set is accurate and up-to-date
- Spatial editing in ArcPro to ensure GIS data sets accurately reflect on-the-ground conditions and are congruent with remotely sensed data sets. Performs topology checks to ensure data quality.
- Incorporates data from timber sale planning and UAS flights
- Fulfilling ongoing and ad hoc GIS and database requests for the forest inventory program
Technical and analytical support for DNR’s Forest Inventory Program:
- Designs, develops, codes, tests, and debugs custom GIS applications and tools to support a collection of forest inventory field data efforts. This work utilizes ArcPro, SQL, Python, and R software and programming languages
- Creates summaries and analyses of forest inventory data
- Provides GIS support to DNR Forest Inventory field crews including analysis of plot data and selection of plots for work planning and quality assurance.
Required Qualifications:
- BS in computer science, information technology, or a related field OR a college degree of a technical nature that provides quantitative skills
OR four years of work experience in which the individual has learned and demonstrated quantitative capabilities which will contribute to this position.
OR an equivalent combination of education and/or experience. - Experience with using ESRI software for editing geospatial data.
- Experience in designing and implementing database schemas for tabular and spatial data sets stored in enterprise-level Oracle and PostgreSQL databases.
- Experience working with the use of SQL for database management and queries.
