These limited term, full-time (40hr/wk) positions, running from mid June to mid September, will gain hands-on experience in forest research and monitoring while working with partners to establish the Santa Cruz Mountains Long Term Forest Stewardship Monitoring Program. The University of California Cooperative Extension, Santa Cruz Mountains Forests Program is currently recruiting for 4-6 positions.
The Forest Monitoring Assistant II will conduct field data collection in Santa Cruz Mtns forests. Responsibilities include vegetation, fuels, and ecological surveys, maintaining field equipment, ensuring data quality, and assisting with plot setup and sampling. Under supervision, sets up and maintains field monitoring equipment. Assists in the design, establishment, and maintenance of forest research plots, and coordinates data collection activities. Collects and prepares ecological and vegetation samples for analysis. Compiles and provides field-collected data to supervisor in various summary reports. Creates spreadsheets, reports, and newsletters for forestry research projects using MS Office Word and Excel programs. Maintains records of field equipment and supplies inventories.
This position is 100% field-based, requiring extensive work in rugged, remote terrain under physically demanding conditions, including long days on foot carrying equipment. Position may require dry camping up to 4 days in a row. Field experience preferred but not required.
