The mission of the Forest Protection Division is to protect Maine’s forest resources and homes from wildfire, respond to disasters and emergencies and to enhance the safe, sound, and responsible management of the forest for this and future generations.
WHAT IS THE ROLE OF PAY & BENEFITS FOREST RANGERS? Forest Rangers perform investigative and protective services work in the detection, prevention, pre-suppression, and suppression of forest fires. Rangers also enforce fire, forestry, environmental, and conservation laws.
The daily work of a Forest Ranger includes: • patrolling an assigned area for fire, forestry, and other natural resource law/regulatory issues, • preparing reports and records related to investigations and fire and emergency plans, • training firefighters and maintaining fire equipment, • conducting informational and outreach programs, and • participating in wildland fire and all-hazard operations in Maine, as well as across the US and in Canada. The Forest Rangers have specialty teams including short haul, firearms instruction, UAS operations, fire investigations, honor guard, field training officers, technology/GIS mapping, fitness, an Incident Management Team, and more. These teams help broaden Rangers’ skills and support the needs of the Maine Forest Service, our partner agencies, and the citizens of Maine.
