Great Mountain Forest (GMF), in Norfolk, Canaan, and Falls Village, Connecticut, invites applications for three undergraduate internships. GMF is a 6,300-acre forest managed for forest health and resilience, biodiversity, forest products, research, education, and recreation. Internships are full-time positions (35 hours/week) that provide practical work experience and a diversity of learning opportunities onsite and with partner conservation nonprofits, forest products professionals, and state agencies.  

Interns will be mentored and supervised by GMF staff and will help in all aspects of forest operations. Work at GMF includes, but is not limited to, collecting and interpreting forest inventory data, enhancing wildlife habitat, implementing timber stand improvements, supporting research projects, maintaining a network of forest roads, cutting and splitting wood, maintaining buildings, tools, and equipment, maintaining recreational trails, and locating and marking boundary lines. The successful candidate is expected to be reliable, adaptable, energetic, excited to learn, and capable of working independently or as a member of a team.

Other requirements and expectations:

  • Enrolled in an undergraduate forestry, wildlife, natural resource, or similar program
  • The knowledge to accurately identify tree species of the northeastern United States
  • Experience using maps, aerial photographs, navigating through forests, using GPS, taking field notes, collecting data, using forest inventory equipment, and using hand tools
  • A valid driver’s license
  • Ability to lift at least 25 lbs. and to traverse uneven and hilly terrain
  • A willingness to work outside in all weather conditions and in the presence of biting insects
  • The maturity and judgment needed to work safely

Additional skills and abilities that are helpful, but not required:

  • Game of LoggingTM Certification
  • ArcGIS, database, and spreadsheet applications experience
  • Interest and experience teaching both adults and children
  • Minimum GPA of 2.5 on 4.0 scale
